Vor einer Woche wurde Zachary eingeladen, die Integrationswerkstatt beim Global Festival of Action for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) der Vereinten Nationen zu vertreten. Die Integrationswerkstatt richtet sich an die SDGs 10 und 11 mit dem Ziel, Ungleichheiten abzubauen und nachhaltige Städte und Gemeinden aufzubauen. Unter den Teilnehmern waren Vertreter von Großstädten und Agrardörfern, aber es waren fast keine Kleinstädte und nicht-agrarische ländliche Regionen vertreten. Auf dem UN-Festival hatte Zachary die Gelegenheit, mit Top-Stadtmanagern aus New York, Bonn, Utrecht und Mailand zu sprechen und so die Perspektive nicht-agrarischer Kleinstädte in eine globale Diskussion einzubringen, die diese wichtige Bevölkerungsgruppe weitgehend unberücksichtigt gelassen hatte.
Ähnlich wie bei den Vereinten Nationen ist Unkel auch die einzige Kleinstadt, die im Deutschen Integrationspreis (und im Europäischen Institut für Dialog) vertreten ist. Dort tritt sie an gemeinsam mit Projekten aus Berlin, Hamburg, Köln und ähnlichen Großstädten. Sowohl in der Entwicklung als auch in der Integration sind die Großstädte über- und die Kleinstädte stark unterrepräsentiert. Dadurch werden nicht nur die besonderen Herausforderungen, vor denen Kleinstädte heute stehen, missachtet, sondern vor allem bleibt das große Potential dieser Städte für das Meistern der globalen Herausforderungen ungenutzt. Ihre Unterstützung für die Integrationswerkstatt wird nicht nur die erfolgreiche Umsetzung dieses leistungsfähigen Projekts in Unkel ermöglichen, sondern auch dazu beitragen, dass unser Integrationsmodell auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene bekannt und möglicherweise erfolgreich repliziert wird.

A week ago, Zachary was invited to represent the Integrationswerkstatt at the United Nations Global Festival of Action for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Integrationswerkstatt works to address SDGs 10 and 11, aiming at reducing inequality and building sustainable cities and communities. Among the attendees were representatives of major world cities and agrarian villages, but there were almost no small towns and non-agrarian rural regions represented. At the UN Festival, Zachary had the opportunity to speak with top city managers from New York, Bonn, Utrecht, and Milan, thereby bringing in the perspective of non-agrarian small towns to a global discussion that had largely overlooked this key population.
Much like at the United Nations, Unkel is also the only small town represented in the German Integration Prize (and in the European Institute for Dialogue), competing among projects from Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and similarly major cities. In both development and integration, cities are disproportionately over-represented and small towns are severely underrepresented, which is tragic in the global conversation where we can provide such a powerful model. Your support for the Integrationswerkstatt will facilitate not just the successful implementation in Unkel, but also allow for the model of integration in this small town to be recognized and hopefully replicated on the national and international scale.
