Crowdfunding since 2010
“Cucula” is a word from the Hausa language and means “to connect something, to do together”. The CUCULA – Refugees Company for Crafts and Design is dedicated to help refugees to build their own future. As a manufacturing company producing design classics by Enzo Mari, CUCULA is offering apprenticeship placements and by this enabling new and real perspectives for refugees. Our first goal is to finance five educational scholarships and to raise money for running the CUCULA-Company.

WHO is CUCULA?

Dear Supporters,

Sophie Cuvelier prepared three little portraits to give you an insight in to the team.
We start with Saidou, Moussa and Jessy.

Saidou
Although Saidou is surely the most quiet of us, he always gives his views on the hot topics of Cucula when he is asked. Saidou is a listener: before jumping in the boiling debate, he thinks about the best way to argue. Discussing, building furniture, cooking, drawing, everything has either to be perfect or not to be. Diligent, precise and talented he might be our finest worker in Cucula.

Moussa
Always smiling, always laughing, Moussa has a cheerful disposition that is simply contagious. What makes him happy are mostly the woodwork workshops. There, he can improve his skills and experiment all kinds of design from his own creation. Give him a pen and a sheet of paper and a few seconds later you will have either a piece of art or some grammar exercises in German! Moussa is definitely the creative spirit of Cucula.

Jessy
If you have any question about how to have an appointment to the doctor, if you got a letter from the immigration office that you don't understand or if you are looking for a lawyer, you will probably come to Jessy to have the right information. In charge of the social part of the project, Jessy organizes our education program from the administrative planning to the very practical application. What makes it very special to her is the dynamic in the group and the precious moments of conviviality that we spend all together. Her commitment and enthusiasm are an inspiration for all the members of Cucula.
