Crowdfunding since 2010
“Cucula” is a word from the Hausa language and means “to connect something, to do together”. The CUCULA – Refugees Company for Crafts and Design is dedicated to help refugees to build their own future. As a manufacturing company producing design classics by Enzo Mari, CUCULA is offering apprenticeship placements and by this enabling new and real perspectives for refugees. Our first goal is to finance five educational scholarships and to raise money for running the CUCULA-Company.

Completing our team, we are introducing Malik, Sebastian and Sophie. Wish you all a Merry Christmas!

Malik:
Cigarette between the lips, guitar in the hands, there is no better way to finish a hard day of work than spending some time with Malik playing music. Usually, after serious conversations or some jokes while playing, worries fly away and the good mood takes over. For Malik, the project finds its strength in the close relationship that we have to one another and the solidarity amongst the team. Cucula is a way to satisfy his will of learning a profession and a language together with fighting for his rights. Therefore, Malik really appreciates the idea of telling his story through furniture design and the according materials. He loves building and sometimes its hard to stop him from work … his latest master pieces are his custom made bed and the 'kinder bank’, which is already a top seller!
His determination to make Cucula reach its goal is very important for the group and encourages all of us to try as hard as we can to make it work!

Sebastian:
Sebastian is the trainer, "Capo" as some of us call him. Besides the fact that he was the main driver of the project idea, he is a good instructor and he knows how to share his knowledge and create a good team spirit. In the workshop, Sebastian gives the instructions but leaves a lot of room for creativity. More than giving a technical training, Sebastian adapts his teaching to each of the trainees to help them develop their skills in the way they want. That is one of the many things he is doing day and night. If he is not in the workshop he is constantly working on the concept and opens opportunities for upcoming exhibitions and meetings with interesting people, who can share their knowledge and experience with the trainees.

Sophie:
Sophie is the good soul of CUCULA, always there for everybody in the team. She assists in the workshops and courses, helps with moving or writing poems, plans evenings and always helps create the right mood and climate. Beyond her crucial support in key moments, she always has the right idea at the right moment. She's a 'social regulator’ in the group, sensing when something is wrong and helping find a solution, which everyone is happy with. Besides, Sophie astonished us with her talent as an illustrator, which has become a central part of our CUCULA team meetings. Sophie, BIG THANKS to you, for your wonderful support!!! Without you, CUCULA would miss a lot of its unique social character. (… Sophie is the author of the profile text here.)
