Decolonize! e.V. supports the film team to realize the shooting in Ghana.

Ghana is the place of origin of Akosua's father. Her search for belonging leads the film team therefore to the capital Accra. The film is a reflection on identity and the representation of migration stories. This narrative is thus only whole if it is traced in all the places that are relevant to the protagonist Akosua: Düsseldorf, Berlin, and Accra. Due to the Corona Pandemic, travel planning was extremely uncertain, but recently traveling has become possible again. Therefore we want to take the chance and rely on your support to fly to Ghana this year. Help us to tell the story of Akosua in full!

FAMILIAR PLACES aims to contribute to the empowerment of womxn and Black / PoC womxn in the film industry, to make migration stories visible and to reflect diversity.

In Germany, about a quarter of the population has a so-called migration background. However, the film is not only aimed at all those people who themselves know multiple affiliation and related issues. It is also aimed at those who are concerned with migration, feminism, and questions of belonging, which can also go hand in hand with complex family constellations and generational conflicts.

The film is also aimed at people who want to get to know the everyday life of people in the Ghanaian diaspora: the difficulties Kofi Aidoo has to deal with as a migrant of an older generation, the questions he asks himself in relation to having a child together with a white German and the reality of life of a German-Ghanaian person. Through Isaac, we get to know a protagonist who takes a critical view of his journey to Germany and wonders if it is worth giving up his life in Ghana for a future in Germany. A question that many people who think about migration are confronted with.

By supporting the trip to Accra, you are making a significant contribution to the making of the film.

You are also contributing to the empowerment of womxn and Black/PoC womxn in the film industry. You are promoting their visibility in front of the camera and increasing the visibility and representation of migration stories as well as diversity in the film landscape.

The film team, made up entirely of womxn, aims to complete the filming in Ghana later this year as the trip to Accra and the filming on location will form the heart of the documentary. The film team dives into hopes, expectations and connections between myths and fairy tales. Mala Reinhardt's previous films RUPA and THE SECOND ATTACK had international success.

As an association we would like to support the team through crowdfunding to raise additional funds to realize this important shooting.

With the funds available so far, the filming in Germany can be realized; however, this does not allow for a shooting trip to Ghana. This filming trip is essential for the content of this project, as shooting in Germany can only depict part of the reality of life of the Ghanaian-German protagonist. Therefore, if the funding is successful, the money will be used for the plane tickets, visa, corona tests, accommodation and board on location. It is important to us that Mala can work as a director with a small baby, which is why a childcare person should also travel with her.
