With your help we will shoot the pilot 'DIVINE419 - HAWKERS HUSTLE'. It's about friendship, religion, fraud and the hustle for a better life.
SYNOPSIS
Kwame is a young Ghanaian living with his uncle Makafui because his parents died when he was fourteen. He just finished Senior High School and dreams of being a successful actor one day. Therefore he wants to study acting. That's what he saves the money for that he earns selling stuff on the roadside. His strict and very religious uncle doesn't know about all this. Their relationship is tense. His best friend Joshua strongly believes in Kwames acting talent. One night Kwame's and Joshua's goods get stolen and he develops the idea to start selling nonmaterial goods instead. They team up and together they abuse the credulousness of the people. Kwame acts a street preacher and Joshua pretends to be a disabled person that gets healed by Kwame. That's how they fool people and get money from them. But the initial success of their new "business strategy" deceives.
The goal is a successful production of the pilot film HAWKERS HUSTLE. If this is achieved and future sponsors can be convinced to finance the other episodes, the story has the potential to extend into a miniseries.
DIVINE419 has different kinds of target audience. The main target are young Ghanaians, who, through their sozialisation in a christian society and through their strive to success, can identify well with the main characters. These Aspects also characterize other societies and cultures. That's why the topic is also interesting outside of the Ghanaian context and targets audiences worldwide.
DIVINE419 wants to show part of the abuse of religion in the everyday life of Ghanaians. Even though the storyline has comic aspects, the film project doesn't just focus on entertainment. It is also critical of society and wants to raise social awareness. This is not achieved by finger-wagging but rather through the focus on the development of the characters.
Filmmaking is expensive, very expensive. And that's why even if this crowdfunding is successful it is still a so called No-Budget-Film. The necessary costs are being kept as low as possible.
But even when everybody works for free, there are costs involved that must be taken into consideration such as equipment, props, set design, locations, transport and catering for cast und crew, etc.
That's why your support is very important for the realization of this project. So even if the 1st funding goal is reached, the campaign is not over. The more money we fund together the better the film is going to be as some scenes will not be shot if the money is not enough.
I am Johannes, a filmmaker from Germany with a strong connection to Ghana. Additional members of cast and crew will be introduced on the blog page as soon as they commit themselves to the project.
