You’ve heard us say it: bigger doesn't always mean better! But when it comes to sexshops, we are definitely size queens! With larger premises, we hope we can create the beautiful, accessible community space we’ve always dreamed of, hosting more workshops, readings, exhibitions, book groups, tours, sextoy show and tells, kinky crochet afternoons, and (almost) everything your queer, sexposi hearts desire.
We want to use this opportunity to build our shop from the ground up, centering the needs of our communities and our collective - and you can be part of it. Kind of like a queerfeminist sexshop Choose Your Own Adventure… but with dildos as dankeschöns?
Although our business is doing pretty well, we’re not in the position to build the sexshop of (y)our dreams. Which is why we’re reaching out to you. If you want to know more about our financial situation, read our Dildonomics text here.
_______
We’ve been dreaming of a larger, wheelchair accessible space for as long as we’ve existed. Now that our team has grown considerably, and we are in a more financially secure position, we’ve decided to dare the leap.
If you know Other Nature, you’ll know that our shop is for everyone! No matter your sexuality or gender, we’re there to give you great advice with a queerfeminist twist.
Our queer-feminist, capitalism-critical politics mean that, although we cater to everybody, we aim to center the pleasure and sexualities of queer, trans, and/or disabled people, sex workers, BIPoCs and other marginalized groups. We believe in redistribution of wealth and resources.
_____

We have estimated a minimal total cost of 30,000 Euros and a maximum of 43,000€. Yes, that is a shit tonne of money!
Why, though? Couldn’t we do it all ourselves for a third of the costs?
We found the new place at very short notice and had literally two months to plan our move, including renovations, while running our shop during the busiest month of the year!!
Also, yes, as you can tell by our wonky shop, we LOVE doing things ourselves - but would need at least 4-6 months to do all the work that is now being done by the profeshs in the space of a few weeks.
So, what’s all that cash even for?
It includes renovation costs (including labour and materials), furnishings and fittings, our extra labour time, double rent, income lost due to closure, and other small costs incurred like van rental, insurance, and getting new locks fitted!
We’ve even had to put some of our ideas on hold due to lack of funds :( Including shelving for the book room and for our storage space, and fitting a wheelchair accessible toilet.
Let’s break it down.
Here are some of our confirmed costs so far:
2k
material costs of the renovation (incl. new flooring and paint)
10k
Labour costs for laying new flooring, ripping out existing tiles, removing cladding of former cool room, and plastering uneven walls
10k
material and woodwork for custom made shelving units by the Schokowerkstatt, a FLINTA run carpentry collective.
2k
double rent paid in September
Over 3k
So far for over hours worked since the beginning of August (we predict we will end up doing double this)
So that’s 27k we’ve already committed.
We project another 5-10k for fixtures and fittings, income lost due to closure, and other small sneaky costs that tend to pile up.
Yup, moving a feminist sexshop is more expensive than you think…
We’re an entirely queer, majorly trans/non-binary and -BIPoC workers’ collective.
