Romania wants to get rid of its stray dogs. The government has made a so called killing law. Thousands and thousands of the estimated 2 million street dogs are brutally caught and put in horrible shelters where they are killed or simply let to starve. In a country that belongs to the European Union from where it gets millions of subventions for many purposes.
Last year, I have been filming during three weeks on this subject. I do love animals and it was very hard for me to face and film the cruel reality. The story behind the story is very simple: you can earn a lot of money on the so called stray dog management. In Bucharest, for instance, a dog catcher gets up to 50 EUR per dog, no surprise they even take away pets from their owners.
All kind of people are involved in this mafia-like business: from corrupt mayors to heartless veterinarians. But I have met and filmed different people, too. Animal lovers from Romania, Germany and all over Europe who desperately try to save as many dogs as possible, activists who protest against the brutal and often illegal actions and sometimes even risk their on health.
I am now preparing an 1-hour-documentary which I was hoping to sell to some TV-station, but in vain. Maybe to cruel, maybe too far away – anyway I will insist and spread these facts to a larger public. That’s why I am trying to save my film with crowdfunding. Please get involved, support my project and help the Romanian stray dogs.
As Mahatma Gandhi already observed, treating animals in a cruel way is a very bad sign for a society and the consequences do concern human beings, too. There is a study which examined how deeply traumatized Romanian children are upon watching their "personal" street dog being misstreated and brutally brought away by dog catchers. My documentary which will be shown on internet and hopefully on some film festival, is adressed to everybody who has an open eye and a feeling heart.
Every supporter of this film will encourage people who stand up for their beliefs. People like Claudiu Dumitriu, a wellknown Romanian animals' rights activist, who is entirely dedicated to his mission to help Romanian stray dogs. Which is what also you would do by supporting my film. Because the world must know what is going on and put pressure on those who are responsable.
Half of the money will be used for postproduction purposes (editing with editor, color correction, sound, rights for music, synchronisation etc.). The other half is intended to refund some of my prior spendings. I have been filming for 3 weeks all over Romania and up to now have spent weeks and months on research, organisation and evaluation of my abandont film material. I have decided to put all my power in making and selling this 1-hour-documentary, but unfortunately (and in spite of many efforts) no TV wants to buy/broadcast it. I don't think of getting rich, but Laila, the Romanian stray dog that I could save from a death camp, expects her bowl to be filled every day. If I get more money than the intended sum, I will donate it to animals' protection projects in Romania.
Stefanie Fink, TV-journalist, author and filmmaker for public TV. Has always been in love with animals. Can’t stop believing in the power of investigative journalism. Please watch (in the enhanced link) my short documentary on the situation of Romanian stray dogs which was shown in ARD German Public TV.

Unfortunately, in spite of many efforts, nobody wants to buy/broadcast my longer documentary „Hundeleben“ ("Dog's life"). Please support my project in order to publish it in the end - against all obstacles!
