An isolated house surrounded by woods and fields in the muddy, icy winter.
This is the setting for ISABEL IN WINTER, a story about the here and now and the question of one's place in life.
24-year-old Isabel is deeply dissatisfied with the place that life has assigned to her. She hates the woods, the cold and her isolation which makes her feel as if she were slowly dying. Just like the old family dog. If she could she would just run away. But there is one big impediment: she is a mother.
She had a child before being herself adult enough to make that kind of decision. But now her 7-year-old son, Jonas, is increasingly expecting her to asume her role as a mother, a demand which she feels utterly unable to fulfill.
For this desperate situation Isabel blames her own mother. The mother who never speaks but writes everything she has to say in a notebook. In Isabel's eyes she has been dictating her life and still does.
Isabel envies her sister, Anna, who has all the possibilities that she herself never had, but refuses to make use of them. For Anna everything seems to be easy, even taking care of Jonas.
Isabel knows that she cannot go on like this especially because it starts becoming clear that her own unhappiness is also affecting her son. Inevitably she will have to face which is maybe the most important decision in her life.
Everyone has wondered about their place in life.
Everyone has known dissatisfaction with the here and now.
Therefore Isabel, the protagonist of our story, is a person anyone can identify with, regardless of her specific situation.
Most of us have experienced the feeling of numbness that follows the realization that one's life is not what one wanted it to be. And most of us know the silence that succeeds the question: Can I change it?
We want to make this feeling visible.
Everybody understands Isabel's yearning for freedom. But one is also tempted to accuse her of selfishness, when she tries to run away from her responsibilities.
We would like to tell a story where there is not the one correct decision to be made. Often enough in real life all options carry the risk of being wrong.
If you can relate to this you are our target audience!
Because behind great things there are great crowds.
We need your support in order to be able to finance our location for this film. ISABEL IN WINTER is set inside and around an isolated house. This location and the landscape that surrounds it are the second protagonist in the film because they are an atmospheric mirror of Isabel's emotions. That's why we have to be able to choose right and not make any trade-offs.
