Im Mittelpunkt der Geschichte steht Lev, ein kleiner Junge, der mit seiner Mutter und der Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben nach Deutschland eingereist ist. Im Gepäck hat er das letzte Geschenk seines Vaters: einen sprechenden Plüschlöwen. Das neue Zuhause gleicht jedoch einem goldenen Käfig. Seine Mutter ist mit der Situation gnadenlos überfordert und Lev ist gezwungen auf eigenen Beinen zu stehen. Sein fantastischer Plüschlöwe hilft ihm dabei.
