The composer and visual artist François Sarhan has been keeping a sound diary since 2019. Not in the sense of an intimate journal, but a logbook like the one kept by a captain who records the events of the day. Sarhan is interested in the forgotten, the very small and - in the style of Georges Perec - the unusual. These micro-events are not notated in the form of scores, but initially only recorded by mixing and cutting sound bytes. In a collaborative composition process together with the musicians of the Zafraan Ensemble, the material is musically shaped and recorded in the studio. As the collection grew, the idea of a card game emerged, which connects the small works of art with image motifs via QR codes on the backs of the cards and invites people to listen to and share them together. We are delighted with how the energy and freshness of the musical ideas are transferred to the card game and would like to share this experience with many people.
The game is best played with 4 to 8 people, but there is also a version for 2 players or 2 teams.
At a glance:
82 playing cards, card format 90mm x 120mm
80 music tracks with a total playing time of over 3 hours
16-page booklet with game rules in German, English and French
Printed in Germany (Hamburg) on FSC-certified paper
We want to bring people together. For us, music is a form of dialog and what could be better than listening to music while playing cards with nice people.
The game requires no knowledge and is suitable for all age groups. An evening of games instead of a concert? That would also be a possibility.
But if you feel like it, you can also make yourself comfortable in an armchair, select cards one after the other, look at the detailed pictures and let your mind wander.
n discussions with the audience after the concerts, we often hear about the many different associations and feelings that the music has triggered. Sometimes, however, there is also reticence or a “I know too little about it”. Every association is valuable, free of right or wrong!
The “LOGBOOK” card game creates wonderful moments of listening together, combined with playful spinning and laughter across generations.
It is also ideal for educational purposes, as it encourages children to talk freely about their listening experiences and introduces them to the world of contemporary art music.
The sound recordings, illustrations and graphics are financed, a sustainable and cooperative printing company has been found. Now we need you to complete the final process and successfully bring the game to market. The card game will definitely go to print and you will definitely get the game delivered, regardless of the funding result!
If more than the funding amount is raised, the print run can be increased and the game can be further developed, e.g. with new additional cards with current diary entries, a special version for children and the distribution of the game in other countries.
The Zafraan Ensemble stands for music that reflects today's life, today's society, today's reality in all its facets. In interaction with other art forms, Zafraan observes, explores and processes what surrounds us: people, events, nature, technologies, the normalities and absurdities of today.
Together with the audience, the 10 musicians from Berlin embark on a journey of discovery through contemporary music and are constantly developing new experience formats. The results include a music theater about multidimensional space, a shadow play about a kite fighter, a contemporary music fair and an app for exploring music in three dimensions. The installation “Like Tears in Rain”, in which the audience controls the musicians' live scores, even won the “Junge Ohren” prize, the biggest prize for music education in the German-speaking world.
The ensemble has enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with the versatile and extremely creative French artist François Sarhan for several years, which is not yet complete with the card game.
