Crowdfunding since 2010

MamiVerlag is back! A diverse new program with artists from Hamburg, Korea and China - ground breaking content, sustainably produced.

MamiVerlag is back! From 2007 to 2015 the independent publishing house released extraordinary picture stories and comic experiments. After a long break MamiVerlag is being brought back to life by two comic artists from Hamburg: Julia Hoße and Magdalena Kaszuba. Both want to keep the ideals of the original publishing house alive: groundbreaking content and careful production, produced sustainably in Germany, to own for little money.

What is this project all about?

We want to publish extraordinary picture stories of special artists which would otherwise be forgotten, because they do not fit into a standard publishing program.

MamiVerlag was founded in 2007 by Anke Feuchtenberger and Stefano Ricci. Both worked with students from several European universities on comic and animation projects and sought a way to publish them. They used their network in the international comic scene to publicize young artists and also to realize their own book experiments.

The publishing house was well rooted in the lively comic scene in Hamburg and has left a big gap to be filled since 2015.

We want to build on the claim of the original MamiVerlag with fresh energy. We will go one step further and produce the products sustainably and in Germany.

Four projects are to be funded as a first step: Stefan Adamick's collection of 100 dreams, Jungyoon Kwon's graphic novel "The Circus", nataljusch's "Big Belly Memory" and Tankaili's "The Monkey Lab".

The non-commercial concept of the original publishers made it possible for the books to be made available for a low price. This is a basic democratic idea - everyone should be able to afford the books, regardless of one's budget. In order for us to continue this concept we need the support of the crowd.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

Our goal is to re-energize the ideals of the original publishing house. And in the future, we want to offer sustainably produced products and give a platform to special content.

Since our new program is very diverse - a comic, a zine, an artist book and a memory game - we do not only address the lively Hamburg comic scene. We go beyond the scope and aim for a crowd interested in art and culture generally and for people who appreciate beautiful books.
We hope to attract supporters to this project who want to foster an independent publishing house, which held a special place in the comic scene.

Why would you support this project?

The crowd has the opportunity to support a project that directly affects the cultural scene in Hamburg.

You - the crowd - promote artists who otherwise might not have the opportunity to reach a broad mass.
With your support, you are promoting a small, independent publishing house that wants to make an important contribution to a lively and varied scene with a diverse program.

With your aid you make it possible for the projects to be produced sustainably without long distance transport.

And you are supporting two courageous artists - and now publishers - in continuing a piece of comic culture in the second generation. MamiVerlag was an inspiration for us and we want it to be an inspiration for young artists in the future.

And you will profit as well: you can enjoy beautiful books.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

With the successful crowdfunding you enable the re-foundation of MamiVerlag!

For this reason we have been preparing everything at full blast for weeks – we have taken care of our website, created our social media presence, we communicated with print shops, browsed paper samples, created flyers and printed stickers. We are also working closely with the artists to prepare their projects.

Currently we are realizing all this on our own initiative and our own money so that everything is ready for the crowdfunding.

With your help we can successfully finance the first four projects we want to realize: An artist book, a graphic novel, a zine and a memory - it is a mix of artists from China, South Korea, and Hamburg.

These projects are going to be produced in Germany by an environmental-friendly printing company in order to minimize CO2 emissions, resource consumption and toxic emissions.

We want to continue to network with international artists, which is why our books will also appear with English translations.

Who are the people behind the project?

The women behind this project are Julia Hoße and Magdalena Kaszuba, who are illustrators and comic artists. We used to study together and have specialized in picture stories. We have realized various exhibitions, book projects and readings.
In 2018, our own first comics were published, so we know how difficult it is to publish unconventional stories.

Through our studies with Anke Feuchtenberger we were introduced to MamiVerlag, which had a lasting influence on our development and showed us the ease of producing beautiful books in small editions.

We wish that MamiVerlag continues to inspire and encourage young artists to realize their storytelling ideas.

Many thanks to all artists of MamiVerlag – from the old and the new generation. Especially Anke Feuchtenberger and Stefano Ricci for their trust and all the artists, who provided us their pictures on the theme "Rebirth".
We also thank our friends, who encourage us and now actively support us in the realization.
