What is this project all about?

Maru loves to play. His favourite game is hide and seek. Every time he plays it with his big sister Selaelo, he cannot find her. She must have superpowers! This is a story about Maru's long walk to his superheroine.

Author Shasha Seakamela has written and successfully published several multilingual children's books in South Africa. He has been living in Berlin with his family for several years and with "Maru and his superheroine / Maru und seine Superheldin" he publishes his first bilingual book in English and German. The funny and beautifully designed pictures are by illustrator Frank Lunar, with whom Shasha has already worked in South Africa.

The story was inspired by Shasha's own children who, like all siblings their age, experience new little adventures together every day. It is clear that this is not always full of harmony - but of course, when in trouble, the siblings stick together!

The book is published by HaWandel, a small publishing house in Neukölln. Since 2015, the fondly illustrated picture books by HaWandel show exciting and funny everyday adventures and diversity as normality in Germany. Thus they contribute to the empowerment and discrimination-sensitive upbringing of children.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

In order to cover part of the printing costs of the first edition of "Maru and his superheroine / Maru und seine Superheldin", we would like to sell the first 100 books before the official publication on 1.12.2022 and send them to our supporters by post.

The target group are all children from the age of about 3 and their families and friends who love the diversity in our world and the little adventures of everyday life and would like to experience this in children's books.

Why would you support this project?

It is important that there are books for ALL children with little heroes and heroines with whom they can identify!

Our book shows a small, exciting and funny story from the everyday life of siblings, with which many children can identify. Through the lovingly designed illustrations, it depicts different dimensions of diversity and thus contributes to the prejudice-free and discrimination-sensitive upbringing of our children. It shows the importance of family and friendship in the lives of children.

With your participation, you help to ensure that the book can be offered to as many children as possible at a good price. Unfortunately, due to the current "paper crisis", the prices for printing and material have risen sharply. With a high percentage of directly sold books (without having to go through online platforms), we can still offer a reasonable price.

The book will be available from December 2022 for 12.95 euros in bookshops, via various online platforms and via our website.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

The money will cover part of the printing costs for the first edition of "Maru and his superheroine".

The book will be printed as a high-quality hardcover in Europe and will be sent to you at the end of November 2022 (before it is available in stores) - just in time before Christmas!
