What is this project all about?

New book on urban heritage from Addis Ababa including the detailed documentation of 17 case studies, comprehensive influence analysis, and a collection of architectural design principles of the architectural heritage.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

The project goal is to create a book, that is captivating for both professionals and the interested general public. The book wants to create more awareness about endangered architectural treasures in an exciting and fast-changing urban context.

Why would you support this project?

The book will compile photographic documentation, detailed architectural drawings as well as concise descriptions of endangered heritage buildings to an extent it has never done before. By supporting this project you help make this book reality.
The book is very educative as well, as it analyses the architectural influences that made up the value of this local type. The book also wants to inspire to think about the contemporary benefit of deeply understanding its unique architectural qualities.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

The money (10.000€ when the crowdfunding started) is needed for layout, editing, printing, delivery, storage, etc. of the book. The exact breakdown of costs is not so easy to answer because all items are only covered to a (fractional) extent. These figures are always based on a mixed calculation.
++ Currently (as of 8.5.2023), 4.700€ are still missing. ++
Get in tough with me if you have any question regarding the funding.

Who are the people behind the project?

Piet Nieder is an architect and researcher, he taught architectural design in Ethiopia and Berlin. Fasil Giorghis and Tadesse Girmay are heritage experts from Ethiopia (EiABC). Further international experts from Italy and Japan are involved - not to forget many talented students from TU-Berlin.

Why does this project contribute to this goal?

The book has been realized in collaboration with Technical University Berlin and Ethiopian Institute for Architecture (EiABC). The knowledge of architectural heritage can help preserve local neighborhoods and their indispensable social and economic bonds within the city. Acknowledging traditional techniques of construction can help innovate low-carbon and climate-resilient solutions for future construction.

This project also pays toward those goals
