What is this project all about?

At Sinfonia Leipzig, our mission is to rescue classical music from its elite status and bring it back to the emotional experience it once was. We are focused on creating a holistic experience. You undoubtedly already know that there is more to an incredible concert than “just” good music. A good drink, lively conversation before and after the concert, meeting new people, discovering exciting locations, perhaps an after-show party, and, above all, a truly exceptional atmosphere in which performers and audience alike immerse themselves. Many people probably associate these aspects more with the last rock or pop concert they attended than with classical music – and this is precisely where we come into the picture. We create this same atmosphere across the entire bandwidth of classical music. From Baroque hits to modern masterpieces, we want to show that this music is still as dazzling as it was at the time of its composition. We want to reach the greatest number of people who might think they don’t like classical music and meet them where they are - in (punk) clubs, unconventional event venues, and even in people’s homes. Of course, these types of locations usually don’t have the financial means to pay for an orchestra - and if we then had to charge 200 euros or more for tickets, this would obviously be in complete opposition to our mission. So, this is where you come in!

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

For us, it’s essential that the classical music experience be made once again accessible to everyone. We want to get away from classical music’s elitist reputation and people’s reluctance to experience “serious” music. These days, classical music isn’t any different than rock, pop, or jazz – it’s all music, and either you like it, or you don’t. Deciding whether or not you like a particular musical genre should be a purely emotional decision and not be influenced by unimportant issues like “What do I need to wear?” or “I don’t know anything about that kind of music.” Classical music spans over 500 years of history, and we are certain that everyone can find some piece composed during that timeframe that appeals to them. They just need to have an opportunity to hear this music with an open mind. We want to lower the threshold for creating this opportunity as far as possible. This starts with flexible ticket prices (3 categories to choose from: pay what you like or can) and goes as far as selecting venues that aren’t typically home to classical music (keyword: punk clubs). Because our orchestra is made up of a diverse group of people, our concerts offer people from every corner of society visibility and a safe space.

Why would you support this project?

By donating to Leipzig’s cultural scene, you can help shape it. As is the unfortunate case with most things in this world, bringing imaginative, inspired music projects to fruition can only happen if there is sufficient funding. The amount of money needed can’t be raised through ticket sales alone - additional financial support is urgently needed.

If cultural events had to be financed solely through the sale of tickets, it would mean that prices would have to start at 250 euros. This is obviously completely counteractive to our goal of making these events accessible to all and is why we are asking for your help in bringing classical music to more people by creating a concert experience that is affordable and available for everyone!

The orchestra is completely self-managed, and we have no structural funding resources. This means that all the money we take in goes directly into the cost of putting on our concerts. Payment to our musicians is, of course, at the top of the list, but other costs – marketing, location rental, technology, etc. – all have to be covered as well.

Together, we can make the music scene more diverse, more accessible, and more exciting. Your support is the key.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

We will use the funds for the projects we have planned for 2024. Our top priority is to ensure that our freelance musicians are paid a fair wage, but also, equally important, we want to keep ticket prices as low as possible for our audiences.

What are the projects we have planned?

A mini-opera in a punk club
A mini-opera in a baroque concert hall
An open-air mini-opera
A major symphony at the “Kulturfabrik” event venue
Recordings of mini-operas – both audio and video
... and so much more!

Of course, these are only the the publicly visible items, but we also want to effectively market our projects, and, of course, we don’t want to ask our orchestra management to work without compensation.
You can see that the money you donate will, first and foremost, benefit people!
Overall, the funds we receive will help us make our musical vision a reality – cultivating the joy of music in our community and beyond.

Who are the people behind the project?

Sinfonia Leipzig is run by a group of musicians led by trombonist Julia Nagel, who founded the orchestra and is its manager. However, without the help of a dedicated team, it would be impossible for them to accomplish the administrative effort required for this project. That’s where Sinfonia Leipzig e.V. comes in: a non-profit organization that serves as the orchestra’s background sponsor.

Speaking of the orchestra - this group is made up of many of Leipzig’s most talented freelance musicians. Through their musical passion and professionalism, they achieve a level of performance unique for this type of ensemble.
But – what would a concert be without an audience? The broad-minded people of Leipzig and the surrounding areas are an essential part of Sinfonia Leipzig.
These people come together to create a diverse and dedicated community committed to spreading the joy of music and promoting musical diversity.
