Climate change is present to all of us. The inland ice is an important marker for the global changes and due to its magnitude in size as a freshwater reservoir, such changes will have great impact on our Earth. Getting a better understanding of these changes can therefore bring us closer to action.
The project and geodetic part of the scientifc measurements are rooted at Brandenburg University of Technology, Germany. Additionally, we will collect samples and conduct measurements in collaborations with other universities and research institutes, amongst these Copenhagen University and Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. Even though modern technology has taken us far, field data, such as snow samples, are crucial for accurate climate modelling. The only way to gather samples is to go to these remote and harsh places and collect the samples. This is where our team from Spurensuche comes into the picture!
Our project goal is to complete our expedition by successfully arriving at the west coast of Greenland after 45 days on the ice, with the pulkas empty of food (mostly) but full of scientific samples and amazing memories.
As written in the project description above, at this stage, our project partners are Brandenburg University of Technology, Copenhagen University and Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland.
You should support our project, if you believe that we as individuals are able to make a difference by taking action. We need your support to get the most possible scientific value out of our expedition, so by supporting us, you support the research on climate change and the continuous development and update of our climate models, that are the foundation for decision-makers.
Since we are not employed at universities but simply collaborating with them, we have had great difficulties getting funding to support our project, as they often require employment to fund research projects. This means, that each team member has agreed to a self-payment of approximately 7000 euros, emphasising that this is a passion project to us!
Doing scientific measurements and taking samples takes time. Every day spend on the ice is expensive, as it requires food and fuel. Additionally and especially, the cost of insurance is a very big expense. The insurance cost increases for each day spend on the ice. If we are able to collect sufficient amount of money, we will be able to spend more time on the ice and thereby increase the scientific value, that we can bring with us home, by making more measurements and collecting more samples for our collaboration partners.
Meet the team! We are seven Arctic and nature lovers distributed across five countries and covering an age span of 30 years!
* Mads-Emil: our 27 year old Danish adventoure sould! He has lived in Greenland for about 2 years plus 6 months on Svalbard. He studies Arctic Engineering and loves kitesurfing, snowboarding, spearfishing and sailing!
* Jakob: our strongest member who will pull the heaviest pulk. he is 27 years old, from Denmark and has lived 6 months in Greenland. He a geotechnical engineer and very passionate about running, orienteering and kayaking!
* Thilde: our team optimist, 27 years old and from Denmark. Like Jakob, she lived 6 months in Greenland. When she is not studying her masters in environmental engineering, Thilde likes to sail and go bouldering!
*Thomas: the scientific spine of our team. He has already participated in Greenland crossings twice as well as several smaller expeditions. Thomas is a senior lector at Brandenburg Technical University and enjoys to run, bike and play guitar in his freetime!
*Hugo: our Norwegian outdoor enthusiast! He is 24, our youngest member, and sees life as one big adventure! He studies industrial economy and technology, but loves to spend most of his free time in the mountains!
*Steffen: our most experienced, humble and kind mountaineer. He is 46 and grew up in Germany. Steffen has an endless list of expeditions in Greenland, Antarctica, Patagonia... (the list goes on!). When he is not skiing or mountaineering, he is on the hunt for old expedition books!
*Sarah: our adventure seeking, loudest laughing team member (helps to scare off polar bears)! She is 29, grew up in Austria, but has lived in many different countries. She also spend one year in Greenland and 6 months on Svalbard. Sarah is a site engineer at a big construction site, and when not on in high visibility clothes, Sarah loves to laugh, be surrounded by people (especially on bikes) and be active outdoors!
Spurensuche 2023
By collecting scientific data for climate research at the inland ice, which is a remote and difficult accessible location. We can only know the changes occuring by going there and taking measurements and samples to help us understand how the ice is changing - changes that affects us all.
We are extending our crowdfunding! The departure date is coming close and we are so grateful for all of your contributions to our expedition.
