Crowdfunding since 2010

On a mission to collectively rewild Galicia: Join our community of land stewards and help us to inspire people and create flourishing ecosystems!

Galicia's wild landscapes face threats from eucalyptus plantations, which harm biodiversity, degrade soil, and increase fire risk. At Sylvester, we’re rethinking land use to restore Europe’s ecosystems. Our WildToken system enables collective financing and ownership for rewilding efforts. Our first project targets rewilding 2 hectares of eucalyptus plantation in northern Galicia. Join us in restoring Galicia’s stunning natural ecosystems and support our mission to protect and rewild Europe.

What is this project all about?

What is the project? We are rewilding a eucalyptus plantation in Galicia to reverse the harmful effects of these plantations on local nature and communities. The existing plantation will be cleared, creating a blank slate for nature and people to flourish.

What is rewilding? Rewilding is a nature restoration approach focusing on the needs of local communities and trusting nature to lead the process. The goal is to recover ecosystem health and biodiversity while re-establishing a harmonious relationship between humans and nature.

Why rewild this plot? Rewilding this plot would prevent its further use as a eucalyptus plantation, which depletes soil, increases risk of wildfires and limits native biodiversity. It will restore resilient ecosystems, capable of supporting healthy communities for generations to come.

What is the goal? Our pilot plot will be the first rewilding hub in Galicia! In addition to restoring the native Atlantic forest, we aim to create an educational space where rewilding processes can be observed and studied, serving as a case study to inspire and empower a larger Galician rewilding movement.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

Through this crowdfunding campaign, we aim to acquire 2 hectares of land in Mañón, Galicia, about an hour’s drive from A Coruña. The funds raised will cover the land purchase, legal costs, and initial rewilding interventions, such as tree planting and the restoration of an ancient spring.
Future rewilding activities will be carried out with the help of our volunteer network, the local community, and you!
Sylvester provides environmentally conscious individuals and local communities with tools to shape rewilding projects based on local environmental and social needs.
To do so, we developed WildTokens: digital certificates that enable collective financing, governance, and rewilding of land. Each WildToken is guarantees your protection of a specific area of land. WildTokens are available in different sizes ranging from 10m² to 500m². By holding a WildToken, you become a supporter and gain access to Sylvester’s online community and platform. Here, you can track the progress of the rewilding efforts and participate in decision-making, actively shaping the restoration of the land.
You can also support our project without buying a WildToken by choosing one of our other support options.

Why would you support this project?

We refuse to focus on the bad news and fall into eco-despair. Rewilding brings us hope and motivates us to act now. With your support, we know that together, we can create a positive change! If we don't act now the plot we want to rewild will be once again used as a eucalyptus plantation further degrading the state of the land and continuing to threaten the local ecosystem. To prevent that, our team of 20 has been working on Sylvester for the past two years, combining knowledge from law, social sciences, biology, design, psychology, and business to develop a tool that offers a fairer, more effective and more collective approach to addressing climate, biodiversity and social issues. What unites us is our shared passion for nature and our strong will to act now.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

In total a plantation size of 3 hectares will be felled. As land is quite expensive and we know it can be a challenge to raise a large amount we have divided our goal into three subgoals to make sure at least one hectare of eucalyptus can be rewilded. In specific we are aiming to raise a minimum of 19k for 1 hectare, 34k for 2 hectare and if you are as motivated as us and everyone chips in we are aiming to raise 48k to rewild all 3 hectares. Once we successfully raise the target amount, the majority of the funds will be used for the purchase of eucalyptus plantations, including covering the legal costs. Additional funds will support a baseline habitat analysis to guide future rewilding interventions, as well as the initial steps to kickstart the ecological restoration, such as tree planting.

Who are the people behind the project?

2.5 years ago, we had the simple idea of buying land with friends to create space for nature. However, land in Europe is expensive! This led us to think bigger and outside of the box. That’s when we founded Sylvester Rewilding as a non-profit association to handle the logistics and bureaucracy of collective land ownership while enabling a larger group of people to join our community.

Sylvester's Wild Climate Club is a registered charitable organization based in Kiel, Germany, with members from across Europe, including Lisbon, Geneva, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Düsseldorf. Our mission is to restore ecosystems and inspire others to do the same. Our eco-team has developed a rewilding manual, one of many scientifically backed resources to guide restoration efforts.
To scale our impact long-term, we created the WildTokens. These tokens allow anyone to participate in rewilding both online and on the ground. By getting a token, you’re not just donating but also joining our community.
By offering Sylvester as a non-profit platform, we share our infrastructure, restoration practices, and promotional tools to empower people across Europe to collectively purchase and rewild land. We truly believe that nature stewardship is a shared responsibility.

Cooperation Partners
For our first pilot project in Spain, we’re collaborating with It’s Thyme, a local regeneration initiative focused on reviving an abandoned village in Mañón, right next to our plot. Their work in permaculture, community building and community integration makes them the perfect partners to share our dream of a thriving environment for nature and communities, for generations to come.

Over the past two years, we’ve also partnered with various rewilding and nature organizations across Europe, hosting workshops to share and build our expertise. Thanks to this collaboration, we have a strong support network within the European rewilding community.

Cooperations

It's Thyme

For our pilot project we are teaming up with It's thyme. It's Thyme is a community who's mission it is to inspire and equip people to become regenerative leaders who can hold space for personal and systemic processes.

Gründungsstipendium Schleswig-Holstein

In 2023 we received project funding through the Gründungsstipendium Schleswig-Holstein issued by the WTSH. With the funding we set up our digital community space and developed our WildTokens.

I do Erasmus University Rotterdam

Since September 2024 we are collaborating with the Erasmus University Rotterdam on their student led NGO consultancy course I do. Through I do we are joined by a team of five business students who we are exchanging our expertise, and knowledge with.

European Young Rewilders

Being part of the European Young Rewilders network we are extending our community of rewilding enthusiasts and share our expertise through workshops and meet ups.
