A holistic integration journey for refugees via mentoring, intercultural exchange, training and practical experience in the food and service sector.

Turning Tables aims to provide training, intercultural exchange and mentoring opportunities to refugees to facilitate their long-term integration in Germany. The project focuses on a training programme that delivers professional skills in the food and service sector and is complemented by practical internships via partnerships with restaurants and related organisations. The project also aims to promote intercultural exchange and limit social exclusion through events and workshops.

What's new at Turning Tables

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Turning Tables has been busy over the last few weeks drumming up support for the project and our crowdfunder in Munich, participating in studies and being featured in news articles!

Here is a snapshot of some of the things we have been up to:

• Technical University Munich Social Entrepreneurship Study: Turning Tables was excited to participate in a study that focuses on new ventures that help alleviate the suffering of refugees arriving in Germany as part of TUM Entrepreneurship Research Institute answering questions around the motivation to start these types of initiatives, expertise and long-term vision and challenges to integration.

• Team Cultural Understanding dinner: The team got together to discuss some of the topics under the crowdfunder and next steps for the project. Every member cooked a dish from his/her country. It was really fantastic to discover some of the commonalities in foods from geographical areas as disperse as Venezuela and Malaysia for example. Both countries use similar methods of cooking dishes in banana leaves. The evening really reinforced the message for us, that food is a great way to promote cultural understanding and a topic starter for conversations that foster knowledge, friendship and stronger ties between different communities.

• Pitch @mantro: Last Thursday Amy had 144 seconds to pitch about the project and the crowdfunder at the 12.min me event hosted by Mantro in Munich, not a small task if you need to condense big topics such as integration, cultural understanding and of course explain our integration journey in such a short timeframe! It was great to network and meet entrepreneurs and projects operating in the Munich Social Entrepreneurship Space!

• MucBook article: renowned Munich blog Mucbook wrote an article about our crowdfunding campaign as part of series of articles on crowdfunding campaigns focusing on food. Please follow the link to read the article (in German): http://www.mucbook.de/2016/02/10/crowdfunding-kampagne-turning-tables-integration-aber-richtig/

What is coming up?

• Article about integration: Turning Tables is teaming up with experts in cultural understanding and coaching in order to provide a snapshot about the role of cultural understanding in integration projects. Stay tuned!
