What is this project all about?

You’d like to pay more attention to sustainability and social fairness when shopping? But you don’t have the time nor the energy to look into the details of every product, you just want to buy a pair of shoes?
WeGreen has developed the Sustainablitity Footprint. It can automatically detect how green and fair the product is that you’re looking at. We have shown that it works, and now we want to bring our Sustainability Footprint to your browser and into the biggest online shops.

We create clarity out of confusion

A growing number of people does not want to support the industial system of exploitation, pollution and depletion anymore. Sustainability is more relevant than ever.
But corporations and retailers are reluctant to tell us about the conditions their products are made under. What’s more, it’s hard not to lose yourself in the jungle of over 400 quality seals, 20 000 manufacturer rankings and 60 NGOs.
Responsible shopping is still too complicated and time consuming. That’s where we at WeGreen come in. We want to save you the work of having to dig for this information. We want you to see instantly how sustainable a product is while you shop, wherever you shop.
Our system collects eco- and other sustainability labels, data on manufacturers and other information and evaluates how trustworthy they are - in short, it does what you do by hand every time you research a product. We compile the data into our Sustainability Footprint for an easy and concise summary. Green - very fair and sustainable, yellow - mediocre, red - better not.

We bring transparency, from Amazon to Zalando

WeGreen has spent the last 5 years proving that our methods and technology work. Over 10 million users so far have seen our
Sustainability Footprint next to over 4 million products at WeGreen.de. Over 400 external partners - such as consumer advocates and NGOs - supply us with information to keep our databases extensive and up-to-date. Our system is the only one of its kind in the world.
But we don’t want to keep ranking only the products available on WeGreen.de. With the WeGreen Shopping Add-on, you can take our Sustainability Footprint directly to your favourite shopping sites. Our Add-on takes green shopping everywhere: to Amazon, Asos, Cyberport, Otto, Zalando and wherever you like.

Install once, use everywhere

The WeGreen Shopping Add-on is a small program for your web browser, Firefox, Chrome etc., that you can install with just a few clicks. From then on, it displays everything important in all supported shops: Our Sustainablitity Footprint and all the information we use to calculate it. It can also recommend a more sustainable product so you don’t have to spend too much time searching for an alternative. The WeGreen Shopping Add-on will be free for all users, and we don’t collect any user data at all.

Our line-up of planned shops so far:

  • Amazon.de
  • Zalando.de
  • Otto.de
  • Asos.de
  • Conrad.de
  • Cyberport.de
  • Redcoon.de
  • Alternate.de

Missing your favourite shopping site? With your help, it will soon be more.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

WeGreen’s goal is to make greener, fairer internet shopping clear and easy for everyone. For us, sustainable shopping starts with being informed, and we are trying to inform as many people as we can.
The WeGreen Shopping Add-on is not only a more convenient way for everyone who is already trying to consume responsibly. We are also trying to reach the people who just can’t be bothered with all the “detective work”. Long story short, what we want is easy, convenient, green shopping for everyone.

Why would you support this project?

We need your help to develop the add-on, because we cannot finance it on our own. Do you want to….

  • see how fair and eco-friendly the products you shop for are, directly on Amazon, Zalando, Otto etc.?
  • keep track of how sustainable the produts are while shopping?
  • greener, fairer online shopping for everybody?

Support us! We will thank you with…

  • Coupons and goodies from green online shops
  • early access to the add-on
  • support for more and more shops
  • support for your favourite shopping site!

By the way, we would love to take on companies or organizations as our official sponsors!

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

We put all the money from this campaign directly into the development of the add-on itself and the databases it draws from. We develop the software, reserarch the data and keep them up to date.
The biggest task is keeping the add-on in working condition. Every time a new version of your browser is released, every time one of the integrated shops changes things and every time one of our data partners makes an adjustment, we have to adjust things on our end. We also have to keep track of any new developments and test continuously to make sure everything works as it should. This is a lot of work, and will never be “finished”. The more money we can raise, the more functionality and support we can build for the add-on.

Our funding goals are:

  • 12.000 €: Add-on for Chrome und Firefox
  • 18.000 €: Full release and support for Firefox
  • 28.000 €: Safari or Internet Explorer
  • 35.000 €: Full release for Safari or Internet Explorer
  • 60.000 €: English shopping website support

Please see “Flexible Funding” to the right for more details. Regardless of which funding goal we can reach, the WeGreen Shopping Add-on will be free for everyone, and stay free.

Who are the people behind the project?

During university, Maurice Stanszus noticed how many people want to consume more sustainably, and how few actually do. He found that limited availability of information and the effort of tracking them down deterred most of them. That is why he developed the ideas behind the Sustainability Footprint and started WeGreen to make it a reality.
As part of hack4good 2014, a world-wide contest for green and fair IT projects, the idea was born to expand WeGreen’s service into a browser add-on. The team behind it was awarded top placements in the global bracket.
