Es ist soweit! Die Abreise Richtung Grönland steht kurz bevor. Am kommenden Donnerstag (30.07.2020) brechen wir auf, um die Spurensuche 2020 zu starten und wir wollen, dass ihr dabei seid. Deshalb folgt uns auf unserem Blog, Instagram und Facebook.

Das Permit, also die Genehmigung der grönländischen Behörden, liegt uns jetzt vor, die Kiste mit der Ausrüstung, den Vorräten und der Messtechnik ist schon vor Ort und wir kümmern uns um die finalen Vorbereitungen. Unter anderem sind wir aktuell dabei das Wetter vor Ort zu beobachten und daraus die Feinplanung zu entwickeln. Bis zuletzt war es eine Zitterpartie, ob wir in diesem Jahr Grönland durchqueren können. Aber die Hartnäckigkeit und die Vorfreude auf diese Erfahrung haben sich gelohnt!
Sobald wir am Freitag (31.07.2020) in Grönland landen, startet die letzte Phase der Vorbereitung. Dazu zählt die offizielle Anmeldung bei den grönländischen Behörden und das Packen der Pulken. Nur wenige Tage später am 04.08.2020 werden wir das Eis betreten und uns unseren Weg zur Westküste bahnen. Dann beginnt auch das Sammeln der wissenschaftlichen Daten. Wir wollen die Höhenänderungen entlang der Traverse messen. Der Vergleich mit den Daten aus den Vorjahren soll in der Nachbearbeitung Aufschluss über den Massenverlust des Gletschers geben. Außerdem werden wir weitere glaziologische Parameter, wie die Dichte und den Eishorizont messen.

We now have the permit, i.e. the approval of the Greenlandic authorities, the box with the equipment, the supplies and the measuring technology is already on site and we take care of the final preparations. Among other things, we are currently observing the weather on site and developing the detailed planning from it. Until the end, it was a tremendous streak whether we could cross Greenland this year. But the persistence and the anticipation for this experience were worth it!
As soon as we land in Greenland on Friday (07/31/2020), the last phase of the preparation starts. This includes the official registration with the Greenlandic authorities and the packing of the pulka. Just a few days later on August 4th, 2020, we will step onto the ice and make our way to the west coast. Then the scientific data begins to be collected. We want to measure the changes in height along the traverse. The comparison with the data from previous years should provide information about the mass loss of the glacier in the post-processing. We will also measure other glaciological parameters such as density and ice horizon.
