Born and raised in Malaysia, Sze Fong first received his instrumental lesson in 2011 from Lin Jiang, former Principal Horn of the Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra. He then entered the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore in the next year with full scholarship awarded to study with Mr Han Chang Chou, Principal Horn of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.
As part of the life in the Conservatory, Sze Fong had the opportunity to play alongside with musicians from the London Sinfonietta and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
Sze Fong is also a passionate chamber music player and is founding member of HEI Brass Quintet which based in Singapore. The quintet has also performed with the Australian Brass Quintet. In August 2014, Sze Fong formed the Trio des Péninsule with his friends at the conservatory and made their debut performance with Brahms’s Horn Trio in November.
He tries to improve his horn playing skills with the best teachers, so he participated in the Norddeutsche Horntage in Germany, and played in masteclasses by horn players Radovan Vlatkovic, Johannes Hinterholzer, Christian Lampert, and Reimund Zell.
He also wants to get as many orcehstral experience as possible and played in various orchestras in Malaysia and Belgium.
Other than playing the horn, Sze Fong also worked as a student intern/orchestra librarian at the conservatory’s Orchestra and Ensembles Office.
Last year he was accepted to the Internationale Junge Orchesterakademie for the first time. He writes about this experience:
"I took part in IJOA in 2018 and we played Bruckner 5; it was a really wonderful 2 learning weeks. Besides all the
coachings from great teachers, I also learnt a lot from my new friends and colleagues. Even until now, some of us still
keep in touch after the akademie. We also had opportunity to record the symphony which I thought it was a special
and great experience. Later it was even broadcasted on BR-Klassik, to me it was such a proud moment when I heard
myself playing in orchestra from the radio. I thought IJOA helps me better shaping myself as a musician so I which
I could join the akademie again."
