"Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls". Guided by UN-SDG 5, Ntombi Langa Radio Project is a women’s radio for rural and urban communities in southern Sahara Africa. It is a platform and & forum that seeks answers for women and girl-child empowerment. It will be a voice-means that spells out the awareness for women and girls and their right to empowerment and self-determination and gives a wakeup call to action. This will be a platform that seeks to understand obstacles that impede women from e.g. accessing equally to resources and provide advice to eliminate and minimize such obstacles to better the situation of women and girls.
Ntombi Langa Radio’s mission is to link African women’s voices in Bremen, Germany, Diaspora & the regions of Sub-Sahara Africa with a concept (themes) based on vibrant communications within diverse communities with the aim of uplifting the lives of rural and urban women and children, incorporating, and developing synergies and local solidarity. Thinking global and acting local.
Even though the continent has witnessed ground-breaking developments in the last decades, gender issues have regressed: women are still considered second-class citizens by their male peers. Largely patriarchal traditions and cultures in SSA challenge women and girls to reach their potential and societal discourse often discourages them from even trying to do so, with narratives focusing on the idea that women are subordinate to men, placing them in a marginalized niche.
Ntombi Langa Radio’s mission is to act as an information platform and forum seeking the economic and social empowerment of women and girls in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Our crowd-funding campaign is a means to generate capital to rent and equip a radio station and globally air about women-specific educational themes related to South-Sahara Africa (SSA). The radio station will be based in Bremen but will broadcast to all countries in SSA and globally, framing the major challenges African women in SSA as well as diasporas worldwide face in the context of societal, economic, and political transformation. By addressing gender imbalances, this project will empower women to find their voice and the courage to transform their societal and economic standing as well as the lives of their families and communities.
How will we achieve this?
Nine out of ten households in SSA have a radio, making it the most prevalent, reliable, and cheapest source of information as well as the most effective medium for trying to achieve societal change across the borders of SSA, reaching marginalized communities which face internal and external displacement, illiteracy, as well as an absence and out-of-reach of print media and electronic devices.
The station will link African women in Bremen and other diasporas with women in SSA. The programmes will focus on enabling women in diasporas to share their experiences, allowing for the dissemination of knowledge across borders and communities. Introductory radio themes will focus on the risks and challenges of migration, such as death through dehydration, abductions by slavers and organ harvesters, and human trafficking.
This will facilitate a shift in the mindset of young Africans who see the Diaspora as the solution to their problems. Other topics will include, but not be limited to, child marriages, genital cutting of girls, as well as other cultural and societal practices and beliefs which act as barriers to achieving gender equality. Ntombi Langa Radio Project is guided by the values and principles of the SDG Goal 5: to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. In short, all 17 UN-SDGs depend on the achievement of Goal 5. Women and girls, everywhere, must have equal rights and opportunity, and be able to live free of violence and discrimination. Women’s equality and empowerment is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, but also integral to all dimensions of inclusive and sustainable development
