What is this project all about?

Ten Years of Hong Kong

The independent Hong Kong film Ten Years focuses on topics from the social and political controversies of the city, such as the implementation of China’s national security law, political independence of Hong Kong and the defense of Cantonese. The political taboos have riled Beijing that the film was banned in mainland China and being called "a virus of the mind" by the state media. Yet it has received the Best Film prize at the Hong Kong Film Awards. As a gesture of resistance towards the suppression, community screenings were organised in Hong Kong and overseas cities such as London, Birmingham, Toronto, Melbourne and Sydney. We are a group of Hongkongers from Berlin.

We are now organizing a screening of Ten Years in Berlin on July 1st, which is the anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover from the United Kingdom to China. The screening aims to reach to the communities in Berlin who wish to gain more insights about Hong Kong under the increasing control of the autocratic government of China.

About the movie

Ten Years depicts a bleak future of Hong Kong by 2025 under the political control of China. The movie is made up of five short films directed by five emerging directors, who have attempted to hypothesize Hong Kong's condition for the next ten years.

“Extras” unveils a false assassination of pro-Beijing camp members in the Labour Day celebration. The intention behind the assassination is to propagate the legislation of the national security law.

Two young people in “Season of the End” attempt to preserve objects from bulldozed homes. When the city has lost sight on conservation, mementos are the only way of preserving familiar objects, and our bodies.

“Dialect” predicts the marginalization of the principal language of Hong Kong – Cantonese, giving way to Putonghua (Mandarin). Speaking Cantonese is portrayed as becoming a violation of school rules and potentially the law.

“Self-Immolator” unfolds an investigation of a suspected case of self-immolation. Imagine that, if one day a Hong Kong citizen set himself on fire to protest against the suppression of freedom, can the rest of us sit back and watch?

In “Local Egg”, elementary school students join the Youth Guards and blindly follow the orders of their superiors. Will you wish this fate on your children or grandchildren?

In reality, we cannot predict what will happen in ten years time. The worsening condition of Hong Kong in recent years, such as the riot in Mong Kok, the disappearance of book-seller Lee Bo and the positioning of Cantonese as a dialect, are signals of a to-be-dystopia. It is possible that it will take less than ten years to turn the grim prophesy into a reality.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

In order to realize the project, the fundraising campaign aims to reach the goal of €1,000. You can either attend the screening by means of donation or simply help us in reaching the goal. We need your support no matter where you are.
**If the goal is not reached by June 30th, the fundraising will fail and the screening has to be cancelled. Your money will be returned to you within 14 business days.

Why would you support this project?

Ten Years has been greatly hindered since its screening. Many cinemas refused to show the movie under political pressure despite great interest and packed screenings. China has boycotted the broadcast of the Hong Kong Film Awards since Ten Years was nominated for best film, and later on condemned by China’s state media. Just before the movie was made available on iTunes Store in Hong Kong, the Chinese government shut down the iTunes’ movie service in China. Amid the suppression, we hope to make the screening a protest against the autocratic power. We hope you can support Ten Years for upholding the freedom and democracy of Hong Kong.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

The screening is a not-for-profit event. Every cent you give will be used to pay for the rental of cinema, the screening fee charged by the distributor, the delivery of the film and the administration fee of this crowdfunding site Startnext.com (5% or under).

Who are the people behind the project?

We are a group of Hong Kong citizens living in Berlin. Besides expressing sympathy over the Internet for the ever-glooming vision of our city, we hope to take actions in support of our people.
