About the architecture of refugee accommodations in Germany.

The photo book "ANKOMMEN" is a visual study of the architectural infrastructure for the accommodation of refugees in Germany. The work creates an examination of the effects that the prevailing construction methods and urban planning measures in this area can have on refugees and locals, as well as the social and political structures embedded in them. What is this project all about?

The means that have been created since the Ukraine war regarding the supply and accommodation of Ukrainian refugees have once again shown how discrimination has long determined refugee policy.

The project "ANKOMMEN" is a visual study of the architectural infrastructure for the accommodation of refugees in Germany. Among other things, it deals with the questions of where integration begins, as well as the extent to which architecture can have a discriminatory effect and whether it consciously excludes?

The work is further an inventory of the accommodation situation of refugees in Germany and studies the handling of the challenges created by the reception of refugees.

The realization of the photographic work was supported by the BFF funding award at the end of 2018. The book dummy was shortlisted for the Kassel Dummy Award in 2020 and shortly after received the German Photo Book Award in the category "Best Student Project".

The book also received publication funding from VG Bildkunst, which already covers half of the production costs.

The book has a total of 252 pages and a format of 255x196mm and is produced by Gutenberg Beuys in Hanover, Germany. The images are printed on Munken Print White an uncoated natural paper. The documents have been incorporated on shortened pages on a blue recycled document paper. The maps are found in the index on a yellow document paper, on which the text at the beginning is also printed.

ANKOMMEN (Arriving), German/English, 252 pages, 25,5 x 19,6 cm, Offset Print, Swiss-Binding, thread stitching, published by Kult Books, Edition of 500, ISBN: 978-91-984059-8-9

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

Through my work, I want to raise awareness of the impact of architecture for housing refugees and stimulate an exploration of the extent to which structural and institutional racism are embedded in our society and in architecture. By recognizing these mechanisms, we not only gain an understanding of the situation of the people affected but also the possibility to change the conditions.

I chose not to show the refugees themselves in the images, but what is provided to them. In this way, I would like to try to focus the debate about the integration of refugees more on the role of those who host them and the responsibility that they also have, so that living together collectively is possible.

The photo book is intended to give a wide variety of people access to the topic of the social impact of architecture in the area of housing refugees. These can be, for example, people who deal with migration or with architecture and urban development or are active in these areas themselves. But also this book wants to address people who are interested in the medium of photography and in socio-political, artistic discussions.

Why would you support this project?

With the support of the project, the possibility is created to realize the book and thus to enable a larger number of people to deal with the subject matter.

Since socio-political projects in the artistic field are not designed for commercial success, they always need people who believe in the impact and values of these works and want to promote them.

Feel free to share crowdfunding with other interested people as well. I'm grateful for all support!

To make sharing easier, I've created a small "Press and Social Media Package" which can be accessed at the following link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16PcthrHfh5YpyQys63m7AnWCDkpjmJSe

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

A total of 16,800€ is required for the publication of the book, almost half of which is already financed through the publication grant from VG Bild-Kunst. The entire money will be used for the production of the book. On the one hand, this will pay for the production costs of the book, such as printing and binding, but also for the design, the introductory text and its translation, font licenses, colour proofs and, of course, the crowdfunding fees themselves.

The books and other thank-you gifts will then be with you by the beginning of May 2022 at the latest.

Who are the people behind the project?

I'm Malte, 26 years old, live and work as a photographer and visual artist in Hannover. After dropping out of my architecture studies, I have been studying photojournalism and documentary photography in Hannover since 2016. In 2018/19 I completed an Erasmus semester at the Royal Academy of Art the Hague. In my work, I use photography as well as other visual media as a means to reflect social structures as well as mechanisms of social order and control. In doing so, I work primarily on long-term socio-political projects. My work has been published in DIE ZEIT and DER SPIEGEL, among others, and exhibited at various venues, such as the Kommunale Galerie Berlin and the f2 Fotofestival Dortmund.

Together with the graphic designer Paul Spehr, I have revised the book in detail during the last months.

The text for the final book was written by Philipp Piechura, who is a sociologist of migration and space at the Hafencity University in Hamburg.

Last summer, Janne Riikonen from Kult Books in Sweden approached me and asked me if I would like to publish the book in his publishing house. Among other things, he is assisting me with production and distribution.
