Crowdfunding since 2010

"BIGGER" is a new photo book project and the third book release by portrait photographer Joseph Wolfgang Ohlert.

Many men feel insecure and lack self-confidence because they do not see themselves represented in the media. However, as we become accustomed to images of diverse bodies, we can all feel more liberated. The book features around 80 portraits and various personal texts by five writers, spanning approximately 200 pages.

What is this project all about?

I'm working on a photo book project that will be released next year. Men of stocky stature are shown. There are thousands of names for it: “Bear, cub, chubby, chub, stocky, thick, fat, strong, overweight, obese, big & tall, curvy, fat,” etc. I want to show that different bodies are worth photographing.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

In general, the topic of “bigger men” is slowly emerging in the media. Model agencies are looking for “Big & Tall”, the male version of “Plus-Size & Curvy” and fashion magazines show bodies outside of the usual mainstream beauty ideal such as “fit and sporty”, campaigns show diversity.
A change is taking place.
Of course the topic is not new, but it is all the more frightening that it is still difficult to feel represented as a bigger person.

For men, when it comes to self-love and self-perception, there is still a lot of silence. This promotes depression and you end up in a vicious circle. Many men don't believe they are allowed to feel sexy or desirable. Shame plays a very big role. Our society has a hard time loving ourselves because self-love is often confused with vanity. The need to feel beautiful is hidden under a thick layer of “toxic masculinity” or prefabricated, limited male role images.

Why would you support this project?

With the book I would like to do my part to create greater visibility for images of bigger people. Many are insecure and have no self-confidence because they don't recognize themselves. The more we get used to images of different bodies, the freer we can all feel. Even some well-trained athletes who try to be “more” every day are often still, or perhaps because of that, unhappy and not satisfied. A goal cannot be achieved if you are not enough for yourself.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

The entire financing goes towards print production and also covers initial costs that have already been incurred.

Who are the people behind the project?

Joseph Wolfgang Ohlert / JWO STUDIO

In collaboration with five writers who dealt with the topics of body, self-love and self-confidence and wrote personal texts, stories and opinions about them specifically for this book.
