Every fifth tree cut worldwide is used for paper production. Despite digitalization and growing environmental awareness, we humans are consuming more trees than the planet’s environment can afford.
CALIMA stands for an alternative to "tree paper": We transform bagasse to TREE-FREE PAPER. Bagasse is a waste of the renewable sugarcane plant leftover after the sugar process, which is upcycled to high-quality paper. This environmentally friendly paper is a naturally light beige color, and it prints and describes itself well. It does not compare to the tired gray recycled paper that you probably know from before!
With this revolutionary upcycling process we contribute to the preservation of the forest ecosystem and the natural CO2 storage. Even more, not a single sugarcane plant has to be cut for the CALIMA paper, because it has already been harvested for its sugar. By the way, if this raw material is not upcycled to paper it is simply burned.
We not only protect the natural CO2 storage forest and its ecosystem but also proactively support a reforestation project by planting a tree for every notebook sold through the organization Plant-for-the-Planet.
We have already taken the first steps with our CALIMA copy papers, which are now available throughout Europe. Now, together with you, we want to further spread the idea of sustainable paper production through the CALIMA notebook.
Characteristic and features of the CALIMA notebook:
Become an ambassador for a world where there is no waste, but only resources. Carry your CALIMA® NATURAL NOTEBOOK proudly and tell your friends how easy it is sometimes to approach things completely differently.
The CALIMA® NATURAL NOTEBOOK is made for you if one of the following applies:
Or nothing like that, just because you enjoy owning this special notebook or want to give it away!
Maybe you have an idea of how much sugar we humans consume every day? More than 70 percent of this sugar in the world comes from sugarcane, which is grown in the tropical regions of the world.
In 2018 alone, 1.907 million tons of sugarcane was harvested worldwide. This resulted in an amount of over 650 million tons of bagasse, the cellulose left after the sugar juices are extracted.
If all this bagasse were upcycled to paper, half of the world's paper needs could be met. Therefore paper production will require only half of all trees being cut today!
With your support, we can make trees survive, and if you help us to spread the word many more trees can be effectively preserved thanks to using a waste product of sugarcane in the sugar process. Please help us in preserving our world for future generations!
If the financing is successful, we will produce as many CALIMA® NATURAL NOTEBOOKS as we can to encourage as many people as possible to rethink paper in the future through this sustainable naturally colored light beige color product.
The idea is to achieve traction towards natural color paper with the CALIMA®️ NATURAL NOTEBOOK and thus be able to convert the market, with the clear objective to show that any other white or dye recycled paper has color chemicals which are not good for the environment.
In a nutshell of the CALIMA team are Alejandro, Mateo, Jorge, Christoph, Filip, Cornelia, Stephan as well as numerous hardworking people in Colombia who earn their living by converting the fibers of local sugarcane bagasse into high-quality paper. The bagasse is the waste left over after the sugar juices are extracted.
We know that waste does not exist in fabulous nature! Everything can be upcycled.
