"The children of Shangrila - Nepal after the Earthquake" is going to be a feature length documentary. With archival footage of theplast 12 years, the film will depict the paths of life of the children of the Shangrila orphange near Kathmandu. The focus will be the children's engagement in the reconstruction of Nepal after the earthquake. The documentary will show the huge challenges but also positive power of the youth of Nepal. A film about the power of dreams in difficult times.

What is this project all about?
Production of a feature length documentary
Film shoot in Nepal: 6 weeks
Nepal needs international help after the devastating earthquake that happened in April 2015. This documentary film is going to be an instrumental tool to raise awareness about the disastrous life circumstances many nepalese have to face. But more so, the film is going to surprise with the powerful optimism and engagement of young nepalese adults who want to rebuild their country again and who dedicate their lives to help the disadvantaged and poor.
The former orphans of the Shangrila orphanage near Kathmandu are young adults now that take the matters of helping others in their own hands after the earthquake. The documentary will show that people who have once received help themselves, will help others in the future, too.
The documentary portrays the lives of Reeta and her friends, her marriage with Mahesh in the context of the huge earthquake, killing 10,000 people and destroying almost one million houses.
With the help of archival footage from 2004 and 2007, the paths of life of Reeta, Mahesh and the other grown up friends from the orphanage become alive in the film.
What is the project goal and who is the project for?
The film is going to raise awareness and highten the attention in regards to the aftermath of the earthquake in Nepal. Nepal is hardly represented in mainstream media but hundreds of thousands of nepalese still need support in housing, drinking water, medical care. Practically, the film is going to bring money back to the people by the DVD sale. Also, Govinda Development Aid Association is using the film for fundraising, in schools and charity events.
The film is also going to be shown on TV, on film festivals and art cinemas to highten the awareness of the problems in Nepal beyond 2016.
Target groups are people that are interested in the life in Nepal and political questions.

By supporting this film you do not only support to create a unique contemporary document, you also support the protagonists in the film and the reconstruction in Nepal:
Govinda Development Aid Association, founder of the Shangrila orphanage, is going to use the film for Fundraising and charity events. The film will vividly depict the challenges of the people in Nepal and will question, how sustainable development aid and politics can work, so that one day the nepalese youth can create their own future in Nepal.
The earnings of the DVD sale will be donated to Govinda Development Aid Association and their reconstruction program.
At the same time, the film will be screened of film festivals, on TV, in art cinemas and schools. The documentary will keep the memory and attention alive to support the people in Nepal. The moving life stories and the optimism of Reeta and her friends are a showcase for many others, struggeling every day in Nepal.

Who are the people behind the project?

Christina Voigt / Christina is a visual anthropologist and filmmaker. She studied at Media Design at Hochschule Augsburg and holds a Master Degree in Visual & Media Anthropology of Freie Universität Berlin. One of her focuses in filmmaking is Nepal, where she has made 3 documentaries so far. The documentary "Beneath Everest - Nepal Reborn" (dir. by Tulsi Bhandari) was nominated for the Golden Key Award at DokFest Kassel / Germany and won the Audience Award at Dialektus Anthropological Film Festival Budapest / Hungary. Christina has worked for ARTE Metropolis, UNIVERSAL and Deutsche Grammophon as well as many social institutions. "The children of Shangrila - Nepal after the Earthquake" is going to be her 4th film in Nepal.

Ranav Adhikari
Ranav is a music ethnologist and visual anthropologist. He grew up in Kathmandu and completed his undergraduate studies in Ethnomusicology at Kathmandu University and has been involved in various projects researching, documenting, archiving and applications of various songs and folklore from different parts of Nepal. He is a Master’s candidate of Visual and Media Anthropology at Freie University Berlin. Ranav also works as a film maker and is also director of Himalayan Blues Festival, and has organized many different concerts and events mostly for the contemporary, folk, alternative musicians of Nepal. He knows Kathmandu by heart and has deep insight into the life situations of young nepalese from his personal perspective.
Composing / Sounddesign / Music Supervisor :
Knox Chandler / Knox Chandler’s career has spanned for over three decades, including performing, recording, arranging and producing, with such acts as REM, Depeche Mode, Grace Jones, Marianne Faithful, Natalie Merchant, The Creatures, and The Golden Palominos etc.. His long stints as a member of The Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Cyndi Lauper‘s band; has given Knox the experience of a worldwide touring musician. Knox attended Bard College in the late 70’s. He was regarded as a brilliant musician who was willing to experiment. After graduating from college with honors in composition and performance his professional career took off. Recent shows with X-Patsy’s (Robert Longo, Barbara Sukowa), J.G.Thirwell, Butterfly Percussion Parade (Budgie, Mabi, Sugizo, Leonard Eto) and his solo guitar performances demonstrate his current importance in contemporary music. He has recently scored a documentary-installation at the Deutsches Historisches Museum. In 2012, he made the arrangements for the film "Greetings from Tim Buckley" (Tribeca Film, NYC). Knox is currently recording and working with Eric Mingus, Miss Kenichi and Craig Walker as well as many other artists from the Berlin music scene.
