Crowdfunding since 2010

You’ve never seen high-performance sports in this way. Sporting drama, human stature and vice versa. A documentation about the dream of the Olympics.

Hi, I’m Silvia and for nearly two years our DIE NORM (NORM = Olympic qualifying standard) team has been sharing the Olympic dream of nine elite athletes. We spent more than 100 days accompanying these remarkable people. Not only did we watch them prepare, we were also allowed to document very personal moments in their lives – moments that marked the real beginning of the competition. With your support, we want to bring the most moving stories to the big screen.

What is this project all about?

The modern-day Olympic motto is “faster, higher, stronger”. It aptly summarizes what the biggest sporting event in the world is all about: performance. Every four years marginalized sports – basically everything apart from football – are at the heart of the sports coverage. Those who triumph become national heroes. But it doesn’t always go according to plan. We want our project DIE NORM to make athletes’ journeys more relatable. We want to reveal how athletes deal with life in an unknown, high-pressure environment, how they handle setbacks and failures, and to show what drives them. As film producers, our focus wasn’t on the sporting success but on the question: why do athletes do this to themselves?

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

Our aim is to introduce the public to an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT type of sports documentary, one that begins where current sports reporting ends.

Consequently, our target groups are film and sports enthusiasts who want to broaden their understanding of high-performance sport in Germany. It’s for all those who want to understand how performance can be predicted, but not guaranteed. That it’s not only top-class athletes who have to make many sacrifices, but that their parents, friends, and partners also come second to the athlete’s dream.

Our project is also geared towards teachers and students who are required to perform well and adhere to certain NORMS (standards) in a non-sports environment as well. Aside from telling moving stories, DIE NORM is also likely to provide a lot of food for thought.

Last but not least, DIE NORM will also appeal to businesses because the concepts of commitment, goals, and “spirit” resonate in that kind of environment.

DIE NORM will give anyone with a passion for sport completely new insights into the world of high-performance sports.

Why would you support this project?

DIE NORM is an independent film project that aims to enthuse and move people. We love sports and believe that they play a key role in social cohesion. We want the project to not only contribute towards giving high-performance sports a fitting place in society, but also to demonstrate what connects us all with top-class athletes.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

We are ready to start producing our second film, but unfortunately we are missing some of the budget required to show it in German cinemas. This is where we need your help.
Once the required FUNDING THRESHOLD has been reached, we will show DIE NORM on the big screen. We will also provide the film on DVD and make it available online and on demand.

Once we have reached our FUNDING GOAL, we will produce three additional spin-off documentaries that tell the protagonists’ stories in more detail.

These spin-offs will only be possible with your support otherwise the footage will disappear into our archives forever.

Spin-off 1 will exclusively document the “Road to Rio” for the beach volleyball team Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst.
Spin-off 2 will show the preparations of German top swimmers Steffen Deibler, Jacob Heidtmann and the youth swimmer Maxine Wolters.
Spin-off 3 will accompany the U23 world rowing champion Tim Ole Naske in his attempt to row his way into the German Olympic team.

Who are the people behind the project?

The team behind DIE NORM are Silvia Weihermüller (producer) und Guido Weihermüller (director). They are supported by the production assistant Lennart Albrecht, the editor Matthias Wolf, the editors Hans Hartmann and Artur Kulaszewski, the cameraman Eduard Ebel, the sound technician Siggi Fischer, the graphic designer Philipp Balzer and many others working in the film industry.

This project would never have happened without the protagonists in front of the camera who shared their lives with us. A big thank you to Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst, Markus Boeckerman und Lars Flueggen, Steffen Deibler, Jacob Heidtmann, Maxine Wolters and Tim Ole Naske as well as Sebastian Bayer. And of course thank you to all their coaches, families, friends, and supporters.

Together with the majority of their current crew, Silvia and Guido Weihermueller have already produced a documentary called “Transition time – on the way to the first triathlon“, which was shown in cinemas in 2014/15. They successfully funded part of the project on Startnext.
