What is this project all about?

Our aim is to present a baroque classic with the new and dynamic style of the young musician’s generation. While we care about a vivacious, energetic play, the artistic quality of our interpretation is of equal importance to us. J.S. Bach’s Six Sonatas count among the classics in baroque music. Although the cycle is not only appreciated by music connoisseurs, it has rarely been played in its integrality. Our concerts’ great success and the increasing demand for an album have reinforced our desire to produce a recording of our reinterpretation.
In our work we put much emphasis on combining lively virtuosity with our fresh, dynamic and direct playing style. Therefore we have developed a new and musically appealing reinterpretation with much engagement and passion. This way we would love to provide you the possibility to enjoy J.S. Bach’s wonderful music in the play of the young musicians’ generation.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

  • We would like to offer everyone who asked about our album the opportunity to listen to our reinterpretation outside of the concert hall.
  • The six Bach Sonatas reinterpreted:
  • Our audience should have the possibility to experience J.S. Bach’s sonatas in a new interpretation which is both technically and musically sophisticated.
  • Our target includes anybody inspired by J.S. Bach’s compositions and baroque- or classical music in general and who is interested in appealing reinterpretations of early music.

Why would you support this project?

  • Combining high technical ambition and artistic depth, this project presents the exceptional work of two baroque virtuosos.

  • The album’s production is ready to take off: a sound studio and a recording engineer are at our disposal and thanks to our extensive concert tour we are ready to start the recording![*] We have developed a new interpretation that unites classical baroque with the fresh playing style of the new musicians’ generation.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

The money will be exclusively invested in the album production (2 CDs), including:

  • The collaboration with an experienced recording engineer throughout the production
  • mixing and mastering
  • Cover Design
  • CD pressing
  • instrument transport
  • instrument maintenance

Who are the people behind the project?

The Duo Niznik & Dotkus: two baroque specialists
Justyna Niznik and Marta Dotkus met in 2008 while studying for their graduate diploma at the music academy in Cologne. Because of their common background and interest in early music, they soon got together and founded the Duo Niznik & Dotkus. After various projects, ranging from early baroque to crossover, they now dedicate themselves to J.S. Bach’s six sonatas for violin and obliged harpsichord.

  • Justyna Niznik studied violin and baroque violin at the music academies in Breslau, Weimar and Cologne. A former member of the EU-funding initiative European Union Baroque Orchestra (EUBO), she toured several times through Europe in 2011. Niznik plays in different early music ensembles and is among others principal violinist at the “Cologne Baroque Orchestra”.
  • Marta Dotkus studied harpsichord in Warsaw and at the Cologne University of Music, where she graduated with distinction. She was a finalist at the Paola Bernardi competition in Bologna 2007.She has gathered manifold experiences by virtue of her busy concert schedule and as a guest of renowned ensembles, and since 2009 she has held a teaching position at the Folkwang University of the Arts.
