Ensemble Arava’s debut CD with cantatas and sonatas from the Habsburg Empire

We are Ensemble Arava, a German-Israeli baroque ensemble consisting of soprano, violin, cello and harpsichord. We became fascinated with the musical paradise that was the Habsburg Empire in 2017. We were preparing for the H.I.F. Biber Competition in Austria, where we were awarded a special prize. It was for this occasion that we first delved into the baroque music of that region and discovered its rich variety of repertoire for our group. This CD is a bouquet of our favourite pieces.

What is this project all about?

In the summer of 2020 we united in the beautiful Edelhof chapel on the outskirts of Hanover, Germany, to record our debut album "The Habsburg Garden of Eden".

This CD pays tribute to the abundant cultural life that had been established in the Habsburg monarchy. This served partially as a demonstration of power to rival with the French court in Versailles.

Countless talented composers took upon themselves the perilous journey over the Alps to Salzburg and Vienna, hoping to join a flourishing network of kindred musical spirits. The prospect of a career in the Habsburg musical centres inspired a remarkable and rich cultural exchange across the mountains.

We hope to captivates the listener with a fine balance of vocal and instrumental music while highlighting the individual members of our ensemble. Taste the fruits of this creative prosperity in an exquisite selection of works by Handel, Caldara, Muffat, Ziani, Biber and Bonporti!

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

After 8 years full of concerts, prizes and countless trips to rehearsals and concerts, we want to share some of our favourite music with the world. This way, our listeners can join us for an hour-long musical journey.

Why would you support this project?

Plenty of music has been written for soprano, violin and continuo, but it is not heard often enough. It is our aim to bring this music to life.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

1st funding level:

- Covering the costs for our sound engineer for this recording
- post production of the CD

2nd and 3rd funding level:

- travel costs for the recording
- harpsichord transport
- photographies for the booklet
- production of the trailer
