Crowdfunding since 2010

A publication about the works of the artist duo: from the absent-minded robot couple Vincent and Emily to the plastic-recycling rover RE:PLACES

The book hello world shows a comprehensive cross-section of our technology-based works of the last ten years. On 160 pages, small to very large works of art are presented, with texts by exciting authors and many great pictures of international exhibitions and encounters between man and machine. The book design is finished and now it will be printed soon - therefore we need your support!

What is this project all about?

As the artist duo Carolin Liebl and Nikolas Schmid-Pfähler, we create artworks that experience a special vivification through elements of kinetics and robotics. They address the reciprocal relationship between humans and technology, which goes beyond a purely functional understanding. We have been doing this together for ten years now, and to mark the occasion we would like to publish a book that shows the full range of our creations:
From the absent-minded robot couple Vincent and Emily to the electricity-digesting giant worm Amplified Entity to our latest series of works exploring the materiality of plastics, it will all be there. There will be an introduction by Agnieszka Kubicka-Dzieduszycka, curator at the WRO Art Center in Wroclaw and text contributions by author and artist Thomas Georg Blank, and curator and author in the field of digital art Lucia Longhi. All texts are in German and English. Graphic designer Lara Hies has conjured up a great layout on 160 pages. The book will be published by the international art book publisher Distanz.
Help us finance the printing of our edition and capture this piece of history in a high-quality book.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

The publication conveys our art projects on an aesthetic and content level in order to make them accessible in the long term. Through the first-time compilation of all our works, connections between the different series of works are drawn.
The book is for everyone who is curious about our work, all robot lovers who want to have the whole family in a compact format, and everyone who wants to get a deeper insight into our work of the last ten years.

Why would you support this project?

You support the creation of the book and thus us and our artistic career. Here's to the next 10 years ;)
With the book you get a deeper insight into our technology-based work with numerous images and exciting texts.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

We put the entire proceeds into the printing costs of the first edition. Ideally, we would like to print 600 books - for our whole crowd ;)
We want to print the 160-page publication in Germany on high-quality, environmentally friendly paper. It should get a binding that opens super flat and where the craftsmanship details are visible, like in our work: a Swiss brochure as open thread stitching with softcover. Pre-order the book and make the production possible!

Who are the people behind the project?

Carolin Liebl & Nikolas Schmid-Pfähler: Since we developed our first joint work, the robot couple Vincent and Emily, in 2012, we have been working as an artist duo. Using elements of kinetics and robotics, we create sculptures and installations that explore the impact of technological developments on aesthetic and social aspects of life. We have since created diverse works and groups of works and have had the great pleasure of doing exhibitions and residencies around the world at exciting venues.

Lara Hies: As a freelance illustrator and graphic designer from Frankfurt am Main, she conceives, designs and realizes visual identities for print and web with a strong empathy for content, a lot of joy and humor. Lara is the mastermind behind the great design of this book.
