Crowdfunding since 2010

We are building a farm cheese dairy in a container for our community supported agriculture. East Brandenburg needs goat cheese - and we need you!

We are the farmers' collective Lawine and have been running a community supported farm with mostly vegetable cultivation in East Brandenburg for 4 years. Now we want to go one step further! We want to build a cheese dairy where we can process the milk from our herd of goats directly on site without delivery routes. Thus, we will finally produce delicious goat cheese for the region and at the same time continue to build a small-scale, sustainable and healthy agriculture!

What is this project all about?

So far, we have mainly produced vegetables - now we want to go one step further and build a farm cheese dairy, where we can process the fresh milk from our future 40 goats directly on site. This will finally allow us to produce delicious goat cheese in all its different varieties!
The cheese dairy is to be installed in the form of a professional cheese dairy container right next to our goat barn. There we will revive the traditional craft of cheesemaking, from fresh milk to the mature cheese wheel!

We want to produce solidarity-based, organic goat cheese for the region - and at the same time continue to build a small-scale, sustainable and healthy agriculture together. With your help, we can take our cheese production into our own hands and thus give agricultural production more of the appreciation it deserves.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

We want to create an opportunity to work collectively and in a self-determined way as small farmers. We want agriculture that allows farmers a respectful animal keeping and breaks with factory farming, monocultural cultivation and global import and export. That's why we’re establishing farming where the people who eat our products get a personal connection to their food.

For us, our dairy products are not simply a commodity for sale.
We see them as a step towards a better regional supply of high-quality food - even in rural areas!

They contribute to more appreciation for the agricultural craft - that is, for what we have learned and do every day!

And they are a solidary link between us as producing farmers and the consumers around us. Through solidarity-based marketing channels, we want to supply to people from the region with all different income backgrounds.

Why would you support this project?

For us, just as for all small farms in the system of monocultural and industrialized agriculture, it’s almost impossible to build up a chain from animal keeping to finished products on our own. The investments are sometimes so large and the food prices so low that, nowadays, a full lifetime is not enough to cover the costs of land and equipment through the farm’s own agricultural production.

We want to do things differently! And for that, we need to take different paths - away from burdensome loans. We as producers and consumers have to work together to put the processing and value creation back into the hands of the small farmers.

By supporting us, you contribute to a sustainable agriculture that focuses not only on production, but also on healthy and respectful animal keeping. We take care of the continuous development of the land on which we work and from which we live, of self-determined and collective labour structures and of embedding nature conservation in agricultural production. And last but not least, your support helps us build long-term relationships with our immediate regional environment.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

In total, we need to invest about 90.000€ in the planning and construction of the cheese dairy. 52.000€ of this amount is the purpose-built cheese dairy container according to required hygiene and safety standards.

But just having a container doesn’t mean we have cheese! We need to install water pipes, build a sewage pit, lay electricity and equip the cheese dairy with the necessary inventory. On top of that, considerabal financial and personal ressources go into the approval of the planning application, the work of the architect and other bureaucratic challenges.

We are applying for a funding which would cover up to 40% of the total costs. The biggest amount needs to be collected through several direct loans as well as this crowdfunding.
Our goal for this crowdfunding is to raise minimum 22.000€, which is around a quarter of the whole investment! The more you contribute, the less financial burden rests on our shoulders now and in the years to come!

Cheese dairy container: 52.000€
Infrastructure: 12.000€
Inventory: 21.000€
Bureaucracy: 5.000€

Who are the people behind the project?

We are the farmers' collective Lawine on the estate Neuendorf im Sande in East Brandenburg. For four years we’ve been cultivating 16 hectares of land in the form of solidarity farming. In the meantime, we supply about 250 people in the region around our farm with fresh organic vegetables every week. We’ve established a small herd of goats and created natural pastures for them. From the start, we have also gradually established nature conservation areas on the property in the form of hedge and tree plantings.
We see our agriculture in a larger political context and therefore understand ourselves to be part of a worldwide movement of small farmers who stand up for their rights and for food sovereignty everywhere.
