Crowdfunding since 2010

Reforestation of tropical rainforest in Brazil trough Agroforestry

The biggest challenge of our time is certainly climate change. Containing it as far as possible is the highest priority of our project. We want to reforest the largest possible piece of former rainforest. Trees store CO2 and give us time in the fight against global warming!

What is this project all about?

We won’t be able to fight climate change if deforestation of the Brazilian rainforest continues. CO2 sink, global rain dispenser or biodiversity Hot- Spot: The Rainforest is of existential importance for global climate.

In Brazil, there are huge territories that have been transformed from live- pulsating rainforests into abandoned savannah. Such a piece of land we want to buy and replant it with an agroforest. In an agroforest, several kinds of plants and trees form a diverse community. In other words: we’re going to plant a productive forest. Trough our project we want to prove that reforestation and agriculture doesn’t have to be seen as a contrast. Agroforestry makes possible a sustainable form of land-use and resolves the contradiction of environmental protection and fruitful farmland. In Brazil, there already exists a big agroforestry community, but influence of agro-business is stopping it from developing big scale flagship projects.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

We want to plant 24 acres of agroforest in Brazil. If possible, we’ll plant another 24 acres. Throughout agroforestry reforestation we want to convince local farmers that planting trees doesn’t cause costs, but makes possible a sustainable agriculture.

Why would you support this project?

In 2017, greenhouse emissions in Europe still reached the incredible number of 4483.1 million tons. (link https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/ statistics-explained/pdfscache/1180.pdf) Across EU Member States in 2017, greenhouse gas emissions were the highest in Germany, followed by the United Kingdom and France.

At the same time standard of living is much higher than in other continents, most of all those parts of the world that are already being hit by global warming effects.

In other words: our wealth os prospering at the costs of others.

We feel ourself responsible to counter this structural injustice by using our privileges as europeans.

The most effective way to slow down global warming is reforestation. (link https://ethz.ch/en/news-and-events/eth-news/news/2019/07/how-trees- could-save-the-climate.html)
In Brazil, it’s much cheaper to buy land and trees grow much faster than in Europe.
Governmental institutions are failing to act on climate crisis all around the planet. Using our Brazil-Europe connection we hope to soften this frightening trend. Help us!

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

We’ll buy the biggest piece of land as possible in the Mata atlântica (link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Forest), Brazils second biggest rainforest that suffered deforestation since the early years of colonization, and reforest it.
-first, we’ll buy 24 acres.
-second, there’ll be investments such as planting trees and implanting necessary infrastructure such as water, roads and electricity.
-If possible, we want to buy another 24 acres.
-Crowfunding Money will be spend 100% in reforestation. Housing and other personal expenses we’re planning to pay with our last years savings.
-We’ll keep you updated on the projects progress on our website. (Link https://www.klimaretten-selbermachen.com/home/)

Who are the people behind the project?

Polly Di Brito (link https://www.instagram.com/polly.di/) and Anatol Oskar Gunkel (link https://www.facebook.com/oskar.basil) such as a small crew of supporters in Brazil and Germany.
Polly. 31 Years old. Wrote a few letters, took a few pictures. Made some movies, too. Planted passion fruit, did some cocoa harvest. Graduated in law, embroidery and film.
Anatol. 24, born in Cologne, living in Brazil for some years now. Fascinated by people and nature in the tropics I coursed Latin American Studies before definitely moving to Brazil. As longer as I’m confronted with sharpened social contrasts, the more it urged me to use my privileges as European for a juster Brazil.
