Stoppt den Tod durch den Strang!

Latif, a young dolphin in the Red Sea off Hurghada, will die, if we don't help him. He's been dragging a rope wrapped around his tail fin for a very long time. The rope cuts into Latif's flesh, causing pain and the risk of infection. In the worst-case, one day the tail fin will be cut off by the rope, and that is a certain death for the dolphin. But Latif isn't the only one stuck with this problem: there are three other dolphins suffering from rope entanglement.

What is this project all about?

If only they weren't exposed to many life-threatening situations, dolphins in the Red Sea off Hurghada (Egypt) could live a life like in paradise. One of these dangers are the ropes coming from the fishing boats. Curious animals get caught in them all the time. When fishermen find a dolphin alive, they cut the rope to release it, but they cannot remove the ropes completely.

In order to free one or several dolphins the "Dolphin Watch Alliance" – an organization dedicated to the research and protection of wild dolphins – will launch an expensive and dangerous rescue mission. Professional animal catchers, dolphin experts and of course veterinarians are ready to get to work. The rope around Latif's tail must be removed in a daring, quick action.

It is also necessary to spread the word about the problem of the fishing boat ropes, therefore the rescue mission should be filmed by professionals. The movie will be available in several languages to all interested parties free of charge.

This action is not just about saving one or several animals. We need to apply public pressure in order to change the ways of fishermen in the long term and to put an end to the rope problem.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

The project has two goals: on the one hand we aim to save a young dolphin, on the other hand we want to have the rescue operation filmed by professional camera teams.

Our target audience are nature lovers, animal rights activists, divers, underwater filmmakers and photographers, vacationers in Egypt, hoteliers, tour operators, diving centres, etc.

Why would you support this project?

Saving the oceans is a daunting task that is probably almost impossible to accomplish. But everyone can make a difference by saving one or several dolphins.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

The money will be used for two purposes: firstly, it will help carry out the complicated rescue operation, and secondly, a camera team will be paid to document the rescue mission with several cameras. This also covers the expenses for the distribution of the film via as many channels as possible (YouTube, social media, TV, direct mail, etc.).

However, nature and wild animals are unpredictable. It is possible that the rescue operation will fail or that there will be no chance to carry out the mission. In this case, the funds will be used for another "Dolphin Watch Alliance" dolphin conservation project with a detailed report on the money spent.

Who are the people behind the project?

The project is organized by the award-winning filmmaker Ulf Marquardt and the "Dolphin Watch Alliance", a nature conservation organization dedicated to researching and protecting Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins in the Red Sea.
