Multimedia queer cabaret at SchwuZ

LILA LIED is a multimedia cabaret evening that transforms SchwuZ in Neukölln into a circus ring. Inspired by Mischa Spoliansky's chanson of the same name, which became the world's anthem for the first homosexual movement, the performance will tell the stories of forgotten queer-feminist performing artists from Weimar-era Germany and connect them to today's continued struggle for emancipation and equality.

What is this project all about?

"We are just different from the others, who only love in step with morality.
" The "Lila Lied" first appeared over 100 years ago and became an anthem for the first homosexual movement in the world. The song calls for a decriminalisation of same-sex love and dreams of a tolerant future.

The colourful and political cabaret evening LILA LIED brings this movement of homosexuals and those who did not conform to societal and gender norms in the 1920s into the Berlin of the present day. A diverse creative team tells these stories through song, acrobatics, burlesque, drag and video installation and will ask critical questions of today's society. LILA LIED is a theatre project by queer people, feminists and migrants in the oldest queer club in Germany, SchwuZ Berlin!

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

LILA LIED serves as a reminder of the political struggles that have been fought by queer artists for an open, joyful society since at least the 1920s and that we have to carry on today. The project addresses everyone who wants to support queer-feminist activism through artistic means.

These emancipation movements are also representative of the struggles of different marginalized groups. In this sense, the evening is meant to encourage us all to live and celebrate our own diversity, both in art and in other areas of life.

Why would you support this project?

The Nazis' reign of terror silenced the diverse and colorful voices of the first queer emancipation movement in the cruelest way imaginable. To help ensure that the legacy of these artists of the Weimar Republic does not remain knowledge confined to academics and experts, we want to tell these stories to everyone, especially young people, and draw inspiration and encouragement from them for our current challenges.

In addition, we would like to pay the artists involved in LILA LIED fairly for their work and thus offer workers in the cultural sector some prospects in this time of crisis.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

The project is supported by the Performing Arts Fund as part of the Neustart Kultur program. Unfortunately this funding is not enough, as hygiene regulations mean that clubs are not yet allowed to open without restrictions, which means that significantly less ticket revenue than hoped can be generated.

With crowdfunding, we would like to compensate for this financial gap and, in addition to paying fair wages, also cover all material costs incurred by the production (including stage/costume design, transportation, room rent).

Who are the people behind the project?

The artistic director of the project is the singer and director Ludwig Obst. With him, an ensemble of diverse artistic and personal backgrounds enters the stage. Curtain up on Akynos, burlesque MILF supreme; Queen of Virginity, drag goddess from Lebanon and former Miss Kotti; Diego Salles, queer circus artist originally from São Paulo; Mala Herba, Polish sound artist with a penchant for witchcraft and Nicky Miller, French-Vietnamese film artist.
