Seventy years after the end of World War 2, how do we remember the crimes committed by Germans? What role does the Shoah – the extermination of the European Jews – play in public discourse, political culture and actions in Germany and Israel? What has happened to the notions of responsibility and learning from history? How does the Shoah make itself felt in Israel today?
Young adults from Israel and Germany talk about the significance of the Shoah in their lives. They are researching the stories of their grandparents and great-grandparents and recording what they find in short films, texts and photos.
We would like to encourage young people to critically examine their history from the perspective of perpetrators and victims.
We want to establish links between young people in Israel and Germany, between religious and secular people, as well as youth with and without a migrant background.
We are running a number of workshops during which we will teach the participants - without glossing over their differences - the necessary multimedia skills and historical background to enable them tell their own story.
We will create context by having a team of highly experienced journalists, filmmakers and historians who will show, explain, expose problems, provoke and deepen discussion. Well-known authors will contribute and comment.
We hope this project will inspire scholars, researchers, journalists, filmmakers, educators, and above all, young people.
REMEMBERING is an attempt to do justice to the much-quoted responsibility resulting from the Holocaust, and to create an awareness of its social impact by preserving eyewitness accounts for subsequent generations.
REMEMBERING respects the differences between remembrance culture in Germany and Israel. At the same time we would like to actively encourage analysis, dialogue and discussion to bring the act of remembering to life.
For the project and the presentation of its results to be as professional as possible, we need another €8000. REMEMBERING will be presented in German, English and Hebrew. €3000 will enable subtitles and translations for all the films. €8000 would allow us to translate all the relevant material created by the participants as well as giving us sufficient money for more background articles about the project.
As the short films will be made to a high professional standard, we also need on-site supervision by filmmakers and professional post-production facilities:
For all of this we need your support!
Without the idealism and commitment of our team and supporters, REMEMBERING would not be possible:
