Crowdfunding since 2010

We’re on a mission to save jaguars in Costa Rica and provide our supporters with bloody good coffee along the way!

Introducing 'Roast for the Roar'—our wild project coffee! We will directly support the nature reserve 'Territorio Jade', home to jaguars and many other amazing species. We have partnered with Humedales Lancaster, protectors of Lancaster Wetlands since 1996, and aim to make a real difference here. Join us in this essential conservation effort and help protect our planet's precious wildlife - by simply drinking bloody good coffee.

What is this project all about?

Saving jaguars? Seriously?

Yes, seriously. Because we believe:

Enjoying exceptional coffee and making the world a bit more sustainable doesn’t always require dramatic compromises.

And even if you're not exactly a (big) cat enthusiast, perhaps the prospect of a new temperature record in 2024 might concern you?

Here in Berlin, we love to be vocal about how hot the summers—and even the Aprils—have become. As the temperature rises, we treasure our Iced (Oat) Lattes, probably as much as you do..

Now, imagine enjoying your coffee not just chilled to perfection but also served with the satisfaction of having contributed to a good cause. Lovely, right?

If big cats, rising temperatures, and Iced Lattes aren't really your thing, then perhaps the quality and taste of your daily cup of coffee are.

With 'Bloody Good Coffee', compromise is a word we simply don't entertain.

We also refuse to settle for 'just any coffee from Latin America' as the foundation of this project.

We seek coffee that is produced holistically, in harmony with nature and the local community, by people who appreciate the diversity and value of Costa Rica's ecosystems, demonstrating how sustainable coffee business can be conducted.

With Hacienda Sonora, we've partnered with those who truly walk the walk.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

We want to have the project coffee available permanently! The mission is to establish, enlarge, regenerate, and protect areas encompassing El Paso del Jaguar.

'Roast for the Roar' is for everyone!

Especially for those among you who:

Especially for those among you who:

  • ... cherish their daily cup of coffee.
  • We intentionally offer two varieties to cater to both the slightly fanatic 'Specialty Coffee Lovers' and the pragmatic 'Fuel me with some bloody good caffeine' folks!
  • ... are concerned about the climate crisis yet feel overwhelmed by the challenge of making a meaningful impact.
  • ... agree that the climate crisis is not cool but are not ready to sacrifice their personal comfort or indulgences.
  • … are simply fans of leopard prints*.

*Turns out 'jaguar print' isn't quite at thing yet, to our disappointment.

Why would you support this project?

Because making an impact has never been easier:
Just drink the coffee you already enjoy every day. But better.

By choosing our coffee, you play a crucial role in preserving Costa Rica's natural landscapes and its diverse wildlife. Especially the jaguars.
And that's wildly important because:

  • "The jaguar has already lost half of its original habitat, ranging from North America to Argentina. It has become extinct in Uruguay and El Salvador."
  • (Continental Corridor for Jaguars, n.d.)
  • "If the decline in the jaguar population continues, it could lead to the extinction of hundreds of species across the American continent."
  • (International Fund for Animal Welfare, 2020)

The jaguar is not only an unarguably majestic animal, but plays a crucial role in maintaining the natural food chain and is an integral part of a balanced ecosystem.

And if you’re still wondering:

What do healthy ecosystems in Costa Rica have to do with me here in (insert wherever you are)?

Costa Rica's forests play a vital role in carbon sequestration, thus contributing to the mitigation of climate change, meaning the forests are our best allies in the climate crisis.

No matter where you are right now, chances are quite high that your country too experiences the severe impacts of climate change. For us in Germany, these impacts are most noticeable in the form of weather extremes. These include heatwaves, droughts, and heavy rainfall events. Summers are becoming hotter and drier, leading to water scarcity and crop failures. Conversely, heavy rains and storms cause flooding, damaging infrastructure.

How does the impact look like in your country?

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

Nobody's personally profiting from your support.

We've calculated that a minimum of €30,000 is needed to finance regeneration efforts impactful enough to make a real difference.

To put it into perspective, with €30,000, we can regenerate at least 40,000 m2 of land.

Of the funds received, 65% will directly support the organisation Humedales Lancaster in Santa Marta.

The remaining 35% will cover artist participation, production, and shipping costs for rewards.

Who are the people behind the project?

19grams is a Berlin-based specialty coffee roaster dedicated to ethical sourcing and direct collaboration with coffee farmers. Since 2002, they have been committed to providing high-quality, sustainable coffee, aiming to make specialty coffee accessible and fairly priced for all.

CarboHeroes, sharing some founders with 19grams, is a climate company focused solely on combating climate change through innovative solutions. Unlike 19grams, CarboHeroes is specifically equipped to make a significant impact on the climate crisis.

Humedales Lancaster, founded in Santa Marta, Costa Rica, in 1996, is dedicated to eco-restoration, species preservation, sustainable forest management, and the conservation of the Lancaster Wetlands.

Their 'Territorio Jade' initiative aims to establish a wildlife corridor from the Reventazón River to the Pacuare River, bridging the Cordillera Volcánica Central and the Cordillera de Talamanca. This corridor enables safe wildlife migration and ensures biodiversity conservation.

What are the sustainable development goals of this project?

Primary sustainable development goal

Life on land

Why does this project contribute to this goal?

We are funding the development of a nature reserve within the Lancaster Wetlands, a crucial segment of the Barbilla-Destierro Biological Corridor. This corridor is essential for the migration of various species, especially jaguars, between North and South America. Our regeneration efforts are aimed at reversing soil degradation and protecting biodiversity for future generations.

This project also pays toward those goals
