The universal drinking aid for people with limited mobility and dysphagia

Many people live in difficult situations where everyday routines and habits, such as drinking, become a major challenge. With sippa we stand by these people without them realizing it. sippa fits into everyday life like a normal drinking vessel and helps where it is needed. Unremarkable. Functional. Simple.

What is this project all about?

If swallowing becomes a difficutly, it's a serious issue!

Swallowing disorder is a typical secondary diagnosis of stroke and traumatic brain injury, but also occurs in Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis. Cancers in the head and neck area can also be considered as a cause. Over 5 million people in Germany suffer from a dysphagia. In addition, there is a high number of unreported cases of persons in whom a dysphagia is overlooked. It is a life-threatening disease that also severely affects the quality of life.

Current supply of drinking aids

When completely emptying an ordinary cup, the head must be stretched backwards. This is on the one hand for many people due to movement restrictions no longer possible, on the other hand opens the respiratory tract, analogous to the procedure in the first aid, and increases the risk to ingest tremendously. But even a neutral head position can not always prevent swallowing in people with dysphagia. sippa is the only available drinking aid with a head position that is proven to reduce or prevent swallowing.

How can sippa help?

When a dysphagia is detected, the cause found and the right treatment initiated, the affected person almost always benefits from intensive swallowing therapy.
In a swallowing therapy e.g. behavioral change, especially a change in head position, attempts to reduce or avoid swallowing. For example, sitting upright with the head bent forward can protect the airways and reduce or prevent ingestion.
sippa is part of this swallowing therapy. It enables sufferers to drink without having to change their head position.
The heart of sippa is a highly elastic membrane that counteracts the drop of the liquid level.

sippa gives people, for whom drinking has become a burden, the possibility of a comfortable and safe fluid intake and thus leads to an enormous increase in the quality of life.

By the way - why does a straw not help?

A straw can often not be used because of ergonomic problems or it leads to an increased risk of swallowing due to the accelerated fluid and the placement in the back of the mouth.

In addition, sippa can also support social partner projects directly with the right Thank you!

The components of sippa:

  • Cup: glass-like cup as base
  • sippa pad: membrane with calibration mechanism, flushable, min. 7 days operational
  • Cap: safer approach with red coloring of the spout, expandable with a valve
  • Handle: combinable on one or both sides, ergonomic grip width
  • Valve: Leakage Protection and Application Help with Angle Lock

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

Unfortunately, the subject of swallowing disorders is not yet socially accepted and often unrecognized. Here we want to enlighten and help! We invite everyone to improve the quality of care or therapy .

Our goals with sippa:

Acceptance by normality

The focus of sippa's product development and design is the combination of ergonomics and design. From the outside, sippa can hardly be recognized as an aid. It has the shape and color of an ordinary drinking vessel and fits easily into any table setting. The practical functions of sippa promote independent drinking - without stigmatizing.

Medical benefits: Reduction of aspiration risk

sippa enables an optimal head positioning for safe drinking, the so-called chin-down and chin-tuck maneuver. The head is bent forward, towards the chest. The change in attitude results in increased respiratory protection. This head position can prevent up to 50% of the aspirations (ingestion).

Modularity for every situation

An individual problem requires an individual aid. Many aids are not customizable and therefore only limited applicable. sippa is a completely modular system to adapt to the needs of the user. Spill protection, handles and the patented sippa mechanism can be combined as an option with the standard cup.

More independence

The easy handling and the individual design options of sippa promote independent drinking. Due to the acquired independence dehydration and malnutrition can be prevented.

Why would you support this project?

It is important for us, in addition to the realization of sippa and thus a solution for many people, who have problems with everyday drinking, also to focus the attention on those people who need our help.

Therefore we want to say with our campaign: Listen, if your grandfather, your friends or relatives conspicuously clear your throat or cough after drinking or eating . Because especially people in old age or in weaker health status can get serious problems here quickly. That's why iuvas also works together with partner projects to raise the issue of swallowing disorders and drinking.

The special idea of this campaign is that you not only have the opportunity to get sippa as a Thank you , but also forward sippa directly to social projects which want to use this product.

iuvas collaborates with three social projects or institutions.

  • The Deutsche PSP-Gesellschaft helps people who suffer from atypical Parkinson's syndrome in coping with their illness in the home environment, informs and clarifies aids.
  • The Foundation Pfennigparade from Munich is involved in 15 different institutions, such as kindergartens, schools, shared housing and care services for people with disabilities.
  • The St. Nikolai-Spitalfond from Waldkirch im Breisgau offers people of old age a new home by providing care in a nursing home or assisted living.

So the project sippa and a social institution can be supported at the same time. A donation receipt can be issued.

Your thank you for social projects will be shared equally among the three organizations.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

So far, we have already managed to bring sippa in a version for the clinic on the market. In order to make sippa available in this version for long-term use, we need your support.

With the crowdfunding campaign we want to achieve that the new sippa version can be realized. For this the production has to be finished. In addition, the technical documentation necessary for a medical device must be completed. A lot of work has already been done from our side, but we need your help for the last steps!

Who are the people behind the project?

We are iuvas, a medical technology start-up from Munich.

We have set ourselves the mission of optimizing processes and products in clinical and nursing everyday life.

With Sinan's background in nursing and David, Moritz and Jonas as engineers, we want to solve current problems in order to create better conditions for people in need of care. Directly with tools or indirectly by improving care processes.
