Campaign against police and military violence

#StopMurderingAfricanPeople is an artistic project that brings together music and social conscience against police and military brutality in Africa and in particular, in Cameroon. We’re going to produce the sound and video for a single as well as a sticker campaign.

In Cameroon the president Paul Biya has been in power for 33 years. It’s a dictatorship, which is distinguished by oppression, the violation of the Cameroonian constitution and Human Rights. Every time the population stands up for their rights, like in 2008, the last time huge sections of society mobilized, the president of the republic sets loose his watchdogs (army and police) to break down the anger of people. The results in 2008: the Cameroonian army and police killed about 243 persons.

The paradox: these soldiers and policemen who are protecting the Biya system are often themselves one of the biggest victims of society. Coming from poor neighborhoods, where they are confronted with unemployment and poverty, joining the army or police is for many young people a way out. Especially when the army and the police are probably the only Cameroonian jobs where salaries are decent and paid on time. For many young people and parents it’s a stable and secured employment.

With the project #StopMurderingAfricanPeople we want to raise awareness among young people and their parents about the crime and aggressions of the police and the army against the population.

#StopMurderingAfricanPeople is also a call to African soldiers and policemen to realize they are participating in organized crime and bad governance every time they repress and make sovereign action for the people impossible.

The main message of the song is to say to young people in the police and the army, and to those who want to join, that ultimately the system is recruiting us to fight against one and another.

#StopMurderingAfricanPeople est un projet artistique musical et social contre les agressions policières et militaires envers les peuples en Afrique et au Cameroun en particulier. Nous voulons produire un single audio, une vidéo ainsi qu’une campagne d’affichage.

Au Cameroun le président Paul Biya a confisqué le pouvoir depuis 33 ans. Une dictature, qui se présente par l’oppression, le viol de la constitution camerounaise et des droits de l’Homme. À chaque fois que le peuple se lève comme ce fut le cas en 2008, année de la dernière mobilisation de la société civile au Cameroun, le président de la république a fait sortir ses chiens de garde (l’armée et la police) pour étouffer la colère publique. Résultat : Plus 100 personnes ont été tuées par des militaires et de la police.

Pourtant ces soldats et policiers qui protègent le système Biya, sont souvent eux mêmes les plus grands victimes du système. Venant des quartiers défavorisés, face au chômage et à la pauvreté, s’engager dans l’armée ou dans la police est donc pour certains jeunes une porte de sortie contre la précarité. Surtout que l’armée et la police au Cameroun sont probablement les seuls corps de métiers qui ne connaissent pas de retard de salaire. Donc pour beaucoup de jeunes et parents c’est un emploi stable et sécurisé.

Avec le projet #StopMurderingAfricanPeople nous voulons sensibiliser les jeunes et les parents sur les crimes et agressions sur la population par l’armée et la police.

#StopMurderingAfricanPeople est aussi une sommation des soldats et policière camerounais pour une prise de conscience de leurs participations aux crimes organisés et à la mauvaise gouvernance via la répression dont ils sont les bourreaux des gouvernants.

Le message général de la chanson est de dire aux jeunes engagés dans la police et l’armée, et, à ceux qui souhaitent s’engager qu’au final le système recrute parmi nous pour se défendre contre nous.

Music is one of the best ways to touch the hearts and minds of youths in Cameroon. We want to organize concerts, spread the song and video as much as possible over socials networks, television, radio etc.

Our communication strategy includes:
1. Free concerts: Several public concerts will be organized in Douala and Yaoundé. Tough neighborhoods where poverty is pushing young people, as a way out, to join the army or police, the only stable jobs that 33 years of dictatorship can offer to the youth.

2. Sticker campaign: Stickers will be spread everywhere in public places in Douala and Yaoundé (central market, hospitals, cultural centers, schools), given to houses in districts to raise awareness among the public and in particular parents who often encourage their children to join the army or police.

3. Spreading the video and the song: They will be spread across social networks, and on television and radio, in order to reach all the families we are unable to meet at our concerts and during our sticker campaign.

Target groups are therefore:
The youth
Civil society
Soldiers and policemen

Étant donné que la musique est l’un des plus grands moyens pour toucher les cœurs et la conscience des jeunes au Cameroun nous voulons organiser des concerts, diffuser la chanson audio et le clip vidéo au maximum sur les réseaux sociaux, la télé, le radio etc.

Notre stratégie de la communication inclut :
1. Concert gratuits : Plusieurs concerts seront organisés à Douala et Yaoundé dans les espaces publics des quartiers difficiles là où la pauvreté pousse les jeunes à choisir comme moyen de s’en sortir les recrutements dans l’armée ou la police qui sont depuis 33 ans les seuls postes d’embauche avec un salaire stable que l’État offre aux jeunes.

2. Campagne d’affichage : Les affiches seront installées dans les espaces publics à Douala et Yaoundé (marché central, hôpital, espaces culturels, écoles), diffuser aux maisons dans les quartiers pour sensibiliser le grand public mais en particulier les parents qui encouragent souvent leurs enfants à faire le choix de l’armée ou la police.

3. Diffusion vidéo et chanson : Elles sera diffusée sur les réseaux sociaux, télévisions et radios dans le but d’atteindre toute les familles que ne nous ne pouvons rencontrer lors de nos concerts et collages d’affiches.
