What is this project all about?

We need your help to bring this fearless new music to audiences in North America. The plan is to perform in four cities-- Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and New York- in November/December 2017. Our composers are hard at work preparing the scores, the musicians are warming up their instruments... join us for the final leg of our journey as we showcase the best of New Vienna in the New World.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

We're asking for EUR 8000 to pay for flights and travel expenses for the musicians of STUDIO DAN VIENNA as we perform in North America in 2017. We're excited to have your support!

Why would you support this project?

STUDIO DAN is the only band in Vienna that can play both the Wien Modern contemporary music festival AND the biggest jazz clubs in Europe. We perform music that combines the best of European contemporary art music with North American jazz and pop traditions. To keep this musical dialogue open between Europe and North America, we need your help to present our program this fall across the pond.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

We'll bring nine STUDIO DAN musicians plus a guest soloist on tour for performances in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and New York. With your help, we'll cover flights and other travel expenses.

Who are the people behind the project?

STUDIO DAN VIENNA makes fresh new music for music's sake, without any commercial additives or artificial sweeteners.
Studio Dan was founded by Daniel Riegler in 2005 for the JazzWerkstatt Wien’s first festival. The ensemble started as big band, but has since morphed to perform in various permutations, depending on the project. The group operates on the borders between diverse subgenres of contemporary music: improvisation, new music, jazz, and (art) rock, to name only a few. Studio Dan is the only Austrian large ensemble belonging neither to the jazz big band mainstream nor to the strictly interpretive contemporary chamber music culture. Instead, the ensemble organically combines composition and improvisation, exploring beyond the bounds of simplistic categories.
