This project is about raising the production budget to make possible a professional documentary about the composer Cristian Vogel and his new creation for immersive sound, "The Ballad of Agnete and The Merman" . The piece will be premiered in Aarhus Denmark, under the official programme of the European Capital of Culture 2017. Independent film makers, Trevor Jacobson and Tanya Goehring aka The Automatic Message, will be travelling from Vancouver to Aarhus to document the work on camera, as Cristian Vogel and his team put together an ambitious proposal for rethinking electronic music performance in 2017. They will then create a final documentary, featuring their footage shot on location, interviews with composer and performers and original soundtrack created by Cristian Vogel.
The project goal is not to fund the music creation itself, but to fund the video documentation alone.
We aim to complete a short film of approximately 30 minutes, to be shown at film festivals and cultural broadcasting (tbc).
The film is intended for an adult audience interested in the aethestics and practice of spatial sound, electronic music and the pioneering work of composer Cristian Vogel, which has not been documented on film before.
"The Ballad of Agnete and The Merman" depends on a big installation of loudspeakers to achieve 3D immersive sound. The piece is being created at Godsbanen theatre in Aarhus. It is a site specific installation especially commissioned for the Aarhus European Capital of Culture 2017, and no tour is planned.
By recording aspects of the installation and performance, interpreting the music with their intriguing videographic style, the documentation by The Automatic Message will reach Cristian Vogel's international fan base, so that they may also share some of the experience even if they can't physically attend.
If we are successful, the funds will be used exclusively on travel, production and equipment costs relating to the shoot on location, and to cover the costs involved in the editing and mastering processes of the final video and audio product.
