What is this project all about?

Every day, 17 million period products are consumed in German-speaking countries alone. A shocking number of them end up in the sea.

Wouldn't it be amazing if all these products could do something good for the oceans instead of polluting them as "waste"?.

We believe tampons can work well for menstruators and help the environment at the same time! We see menstruation for what it is: a completely natural process. That's why we want to (re)connect it with nature, by using one of its greatest gifts - seaweed.

That's why we're developing the world's first "Kelpon" - a radically sustainable, ocean-friendly and healthy tampon made from kelp.

Although menstruation is part of everyday life for more than half of the world's population, there is currently hardly any way to menstruate in a healthy and sustainable way. Although, fortunately, some more sustainable alternatives already exist - unfortunately, most don't work well for everyone and often fail to deliver on their "green" promises.

Why seaweed?

For health:

  • Seaweed is a healthy superfood and has also long been used in medicine due to its anti-inflammatory and absorbent properties.
  • In the Kelpon, our seaweed fibers facilitate insertion, do not dry out mucous membranes and respect the balance of the vaginal microbiome.
  • The seaweed extract from which our fibers are obtained is naturally white, so it does not need to be bleached and is free of harmful substances.

For the planet:

  • Seaweed reduces greenhouse gasses and cleanses the ocean by binding large amounts of Co2 and nitrogen. In the process, these "blue lungs" produce most of the Earth's oxygen.
  • They form the basis of marine food webs, providing nursery and habitat for many fish. By counteracting ocean acidification, they save coral reefs.
  • And seaweeds can do even more: they grow up to 10x faster than land plants and don't need any fresh water, pesticides, fertilizers, or even land.

Our products are completely biodegradable, both on land and in water, and can form the basis for new life - from the sea back to the sea.

Vyld is here to establish the controlled cultivation of algae as a marine conservation measure by harnessing seaweed as a sustainable material for everyday products, such as tampons, diapers, or cotton wool.

In doing so, we are establishing a regenerative marine permaculture in which a variety of products can be derived from one algae.

If you want to stay up to date on how we are re-vylding the oceans subscribe to our Newsletter and follow us on Instagram or LinkedIn!

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

Our goal is a regenerative "Algaeverse" - a universe of sustainable and healthy algae products whose production does good for the earth and the ocean instead of exploiting them.

Whether you menstruate or not, if you want to contribute to saving the oceans and gender equality, you've come to the right place!

The controlled cultivation of seaweed actively stabilizes ecosystems. We want our products to help maximize the great benefits that seaweed has on ocean health and raise awareness of this natural climate crisis solution. With our Kelpons, we can contribute to at least 12 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

And period products are just the beginning, our fibers can be used for anything that needs healthy absorption - from baby diapers to incontinence care.

In the past, period products were developed primarily by non-menstruators - and decisions were often made for economic reasons rather than functionality or sustainability considerations.

  • We want to develop our products together with the people they are made for, right from the start. That's why we want you as a co-developer!
  • We start with tampons because they are in direct contact with one of the most sensitive parts of the body - for over 120 hours every month! Of course, in the long run, we want 100% seaweed: string, wrapper and packaging as sustainable as possible.

If we manage to raise 100.000€, we can finance the production of the first batch of Kelpons, which can be tested by you and our other supporters. Our Beta test, so to speak. This way we can incorporate your feedback directly into the further product development. Therefore, each supporter receives their Kelpons in addition to the chosen reward!!!

The kind of products and by whom they are developed and produced has an enormous impact on all our lives and the planet. The "how" is also as important to us as a company as the "what" - we want Vyld to grow as sustainably as our seaweed.

That's why we founded Vyld in the Steward-Ownership-Model. That means our profits are not paid out as shareholder dividends, but go directly back into our mission. That's why we don't raise traditional startup funding designed for extremely fast, unsustainable growth and shareholder value. We also want to find healthier ways in our funding and this crowdfunding campaign is one of them.

If you want to menstruate better, save the oceans, have a better economy and production, or even all of these at the same time, you should support us.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

Over the last 1.5 years, we have developed the first prototypes and successfully tested them in the lab. Now we need your support to achieve the ideal absorbency and the best wearing comfort. Since the Kelpon is the world's first tampon made from seaweed, there is a lot to do!

Specifically, we are working to make the tampon surface feel at least as smooth and comfortable as the surface of tampons with plastic around it. Due to the special properties of our seaweed fiber, it can be naturally much less fuzzy. We also want to further increase the seaweed content of our current prototypes to enhance the positive effects on the vaginal microbiome. And when it all works in the lab, it needs to be able to be processed on the giant tampon machines.

50.000€
Further development of the prototype into a functional prototype, 100% plastic-free.

100.000€
Production of the very first batch of Kelpons you can test - our Beta version. You can test the Kelpon before it is on the market and share your experiences with us and the community. We will take your valuable feedback to further improve the Kelpon.

If everything goes smoothly, we will be able to release the next batch of Kelpons, made possible by you, as early as summer 2023.

Who are the people behind the project?

Vyld was founded in 2021 in Berlin by Ines Schiller as a self-owned Purpose Company in Steward-Ownership.

Ines and Melanie have been successfully collaborating on innovative projects for over 10 years, including a film revolution (FOGMA), working to advance the Unconditional Basic Income (Mein Grundeinkommen e.V.) and developing fish without the catch (Bluu Seafood).

For the two "Ocean Lovers", Vyld is the link between earning a living and social change. Because it tackles many issues that are close to their hearts: Environmentalism, Feminism, Regenerative Economy, New Work and (Nature)Connection.
They are supported by a wonderful creative team: Verena, a studied artist and independent Rewilding mentor, is your first point of contact as Vyld’s community manager. Antonia, as Creative Director, is the artistic lead for the campaign.

To paraphrase the “Beste Band der Welt”: Even though it's not our fault that the world is the way it is, we don't want it to stay that way.

Currently Vyld is looking for reinforcement in R&D and business development, so if you are a genius scientist (biopolymers, textile science, material science, mechanical engineering etc.) or smart entrepreneur, feel free to contact us at [email protected].

What are the sustainable development goals of this project?

Primary sustainable development goal

Life below water

Why does this project contribute to this goal?

Because we combine menstrual health and regenerative seaweed cultivation, we contribute to at least 12 of the 17 SDGs (1,3,4,5,6,8,9,10,12,13,14,15). Controlled cultivation of seaweed is a natural climate crisis solution and actively stabilizes ecosystems. Livelihoods in coastal communities are improved - these new revenues typically benefit womxn and can thus contribute to gender equality.

This project also pays toward those goals
