In March 2015 we successfully shot the first episode of "Zoey & Ben", which depicted Ben and Zoeys first day together after Zoey discovered her mother Sarah with a drug overdose and had to move in with her father. The second episode that we are planning to shoot this year will deal with the custody battle between Ben and Sarah and the consequences such exertions have on a child.
The long term goal is to shoot a 10-15 minute episode every year for ten years and thereby tell a touching father-daughter-story in an unconventional, yet very interesting and special way. The fact that the viewer will actually be able to watch the characters age and develop on screen brings a film to a whole new level of authenticity. Most of all though we want to produce a beautiful, touching film for those who want to see real characters and real emotions on screen.
The project goal is to raise enough money to produce the second episode of our long term film project "Zoey & Ben". Our film will be for everyone who likes films with real people and real emotions and doesn't care too much about seeing computer generated special effects in basically every frame of the movie. And although we don't like the comparison too much, because we are making our own unique movie, it's going to be a movie for everyone who liked "Boyhood" and the way of storytelling that Linklater chose for his masterpiece.
Small, unconventional and most importantly non-commercial film projects are hard to produce, although they are very often the kind of projects that still manage to surprise or really touch us. Supporting a project like ours ensures that those films will still be made and that young ambitious film crews will be able to continue to implement their creative visions.
The money will be mainly used for two things: technical equipment and catering.
Since we are shooting material that we still want to look good and up to date in 10 years we need to borrow a high class camera. And although we get some students discounts and have found ways to work with incredibly little amounts of money, we cannot get the equipment for free and therefore need assistance here.
The second and also very important field we need some money for is catering. Our whole crew is working for free and just out of passion for the project, so the least we want to do is make the shoot fun for them and as pleasant as possible. And since filmmaking is a lot of fun, but also exhausting it is crucial to just be able to offer cast and crew enough food.
Those are two really big cost factors, but of course there are others: renting locations, getting the people to the locations, accommodations for the actors that come from all over Germany, etc. So, to sum this up: The money will be used to fulfill our dream and produce the second episode of "Zoey & Ben" as professionally and beautiful as we plan to.
The head behind the project is Alex, who is writer, director and producer of "Zoey & Ben" all in one. Alex did his B.A. in film studies in 2015 and has been working as a freelance filmmaker since then. Alex would be nothing without his amazing crew, though, that has been working on a number of successful short film projects with him now and that he is incredibly thankful for.
All in all the people behind the project are a group of young filmmakers that want to see filmmaking as a passion first and as a job second.
