It will provide for living costs of the people in the cultural center, we share what we have with those who need it.
We are the collective and cultural center Nyomuta Kaafo and want to expand our activities to do a short film. We felt the need to do this, because close to our home in Brikama, in the area of Sanyang, is a big Chinese fishmeal-company, which uses practices that damage the environment of the area. They pollute the air, overfish and throw the dead fish back to sea, if they don’t use all that was caught in the nets. The dead fishes end up stranded on the beaches the next day. They also dump the waist-waters in the sea, which causes to bloom of seaweed. There are three Companies in the Gambia, but even more on all the Coastline of Westafrica. In Guinea the fishing is already restricted for the local fishermen, as the interests of the companies are prioritized by the government.
The people from Sanyang don’t want to accept the situation and organized protests. This did have an influence, but the companies continued their production after a while and still don’t have to show what kind of waist they dump in the sea.
Ousman is environmental activist, who grew up in the area and suffers from the damage he has to see in front of his eyes. The practices of the fishmeal companies are not the only problem. The next neo-colonial enterprise is just around the corner: the mining of black sand. Nobody in the region of Sanyang has any profit from giving these raw materials to Europe and China, probably some politicians do…
Greta Thunberg could not change the politics of exploiting the lands and seas yet, but she is successful in making those practices visible and gathering people all over the world to fight for our environment and our future. The exploitation on the African continent has been worse on this planet for ages and we have to build stronger connections between the movements to suceed.
What can we do to support these activists like Ousman to protect their homelands? And what has to be done for young people in Africa to fell like there life here is respected…? Ousman and his colleagues will help to find answers to this questions. He knows change can only happen with the involvement of a global movement. So the goal is to support these activities and connect environmental activism.
This movie is for all those people, who cannot bare to watch the destruction companies do on this continent. We need to find strategies for a bright future.
This will be the first movie of Nyomuta Kaafo and as there are no film schools in the Gambia, it is a longer process to find our filmic language. But we are dedicated to make this happen and build up on this experience for further movie productions. This project is for all of us, as well as for the movie industry that can also use some fresh winds from the South
To care for the peoples lifes in the Gambia by funding an art project
and to support protecting the environment of this area.
“Adults keep saying, we owe it o the young people to give them hope. But I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel everyday. And then I want you to act… I want you to act as if your house is on fire. Because it is” Greta Thunberg
* for the production costs of the collective
the food prices in Gambia are three times higher then last year, as well as water, electricity and internet. Working on this project needs a lot of costly electricity, that comes a long way from Turkey.
* transportation costs
there are no public transportations in this are, just some collective taxis and individual taxis. This makes it difficult and expensive to get around. To shoot in different areas of the Gambia we have to calculate a lot of transportation costs. Like the food prices, the gas prices increased during the last months
* some fees and taxes
* If we extend the goal of reaching € 3400,- we will also collect money for postproduction, that includes sound design, editing and color correction
* if we extend the extended goal of € 4400,- we will include the production of animation for the movie.
We are the cultural center Nyomuta Kaafo, which means "togetherness" in Mandinka. Our goal is to work with new media, especially film, sound and animation. We are with different backgrounds and experiences and learn from each other in the process of working together.
My name is Barbara Wilding, a filmmaker and artist from Austria. For the last 20 years I lived in Vienna, studied at the academy of fine arts and worked in art and film projects with the focus on animation and documentary. Last year I finished two feature length historic documentaries, which I produced, directed and to some extend did camera, editing and animations. When we started the cultural center Nyomuta Kaafo with my friends from Gambia, I realised that the interests for film is much bigger than the possibilities offered in the area. I have some equipment gathered from Austria, so we are ready to start with that. It has been important for me to have a political aim in my artistic projects, as we want contribute in protecting the nature with this film.

This movie is about an environmental activist, who makes the exploitation of the area visible. The Idea of the movie is to connect environmental activists from different parts of the world to support each other. The cultural center Nyomuto Kaafo was founded for collaborations in arts and culture. It will provide an infrastructure to do media art projects. This movie is the first production in this field and will educate in camera, sound, editing and team work.
