Spitzenkandidaten

Die Kür des Kommissionspräsidenten in den letzten Tagen erinnerte an eine Tragikomödie - bis hin zu einem erstaunlich undiplomatischen Kommentar des Brüsseler ARD-Korrespondenten. Was mir dabei dank @NeinQuarterly auffiel: "Spitzenkandidat" ist jetzt scheinbar auch ein im Englischen gebräuchliches Wort. Auch der EU Observer titelte am Montag: "The Spitzenkandidaten – this time was it different?" Wird das Wort nun wirklich in den englischen Wortschatz aufgenommen - warum auch immer "Top Candidate" hier nicht benutzt wird - ist das auf jeden Fall ein Gewinn. Vor allem, wenn man bedenkt, dass bisher Kindergarten und Blitzkrieg die Liste der deutschen Lehnwörter im Englischen anführen.

The discussion about the future president of the EU commission in the past few days reminds me of a tragicomedy - up to an amazingly undiplomatic comment by the Bruxelles based correspondent for ARD, a major German TV station. Thanks to @NeinQuarterly I noticed that obviously the German word "Spitzenkandidat" is now also used in English. What is more, the EU Observer headline on Monday read: "The Spitzenkandidaten – this time was it different?" Should the word really make it to the English thesaurus - no matter why "Top Candidate" is not used here - I think it is a success considering that Kindergarten and Blitzkrieg lead the list of German loanwords so far.
